Munster’s Hard No.1 Tip Leaves Walsh in Origin Doubt

Queensland’s Fullback Dilemma and Cameron Munster’s Insight

As the first game of the State of Origin series approaches on May 27, the debate over who will take the fullback position for Queensland continues to intensify. Billy Slater, the Maroons’ coach, is faced with a tough decision between three talented players: Kalyn Ponga, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, and Reece Walsh.

Each of these players brings unique strengths to the table. Ponga made a strong return from injury in his recent performance against the Rabbitohs, showcasing his ability to impact the game significantly. Meanwhile, Walsh has been highlighted as one of the best fullbacks in the competition after leading the Broncos to a title last season. Tabuai-Fidow, who was instrumental in Queensland’s victory in Game Three last year, remains a strong contender as well.

Cameron Munster, the reigning Maroons captain, has shared his thoughts on the matter. He believes that while Ponga’s role might be more specific, he is not ready to make a definitive choice on the other two players.

“Who have we got? Hammer (Tabuai-Fidow), Reece and Kalyn,” Munster said on Nine’s 100% Footy.

“It’s going to be a tough one. Hammer was there in Game Three and Reece had a great backend of the year so I’m sure one of them will be pretty handy in their position.”

Munster added that he thinks Ponga could potentially secure the No.14 jersey, given his versatility. “Kalyn can play every position, same with Hammer so I’m sure they’ll both be in the 19. With the great rules these days you can have a bench and pretty much pick whoever you want in case someone gets injured. It’s a great luxury to have.”

This bold call to potentially omit Walsh from the fullback spot is significant, especially considering his standout performance during last year’s finals series, including against Munster’s Storm in the NRL grand final. However, coaches now have the flexibility to carry six players on their bench, although only four can be used during the game.

Key Players and Team Selection

Munster also praised the North Queensland contingent fighting for a spot in Slater’s squad. The Cowboys are currently sixth on the NRL ladder, and their performance has caught the attention of many.

“Jake Clifford’s been playing some outstanding footy and Tommy Dearden,” Munster noted.

He also mentioned Briton Nikora, who is now eligible for Queensland, as a potential back-rower for the team. “He’s going to be a handy back-rower for us but we’re pretty star-studded with back rowers as well with Heilum Luki, (Kulikefu) Finefeuiaki at the Dolphins, he’s playing career best footy.”

While it’s still unclear what the final team will look like, Munster is confident about two players making the cut. “I can probably guarantee that Patty Carrigan and Harry Grant will probably be in there.”

Slater is set to announce his Queensland squad on Monday, May 18. As the countdown to Origin I continues, fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting the final decisions that will shape the team for the upcoming series.
