Renowned ABC broadcaster passes away at 84

A Legacy of Passion and Excellence

Clarke Hansen, a revered figure in the Australian broadcasting industry, has passed away at the age of 84. His death on April 30 has left a void in the world of sports media, with colleagues, fans, and former colleagues mourning the loss of a true pioneer.

Hansen’s career began in 1965 as a newsreader for NRN Channel 10 in Coffs Harbour. This was just the start of a long and illustrious journey that would see him become one of the most respected voices in Australian sports broadcasting. In 1967, he joined the ABC, where he quickly made a name for himself as an energetic and enthusiastic sports reporter and commentator.

His work on the ABC brought him into the spotlight, particularly for his coverage of football and tennis. He was known for his deep knowledge of the game and his ability to bring matches to life for listeners and viewers alike. One of his most memorable partnerships was with fellow broadcasting legend Doug Heywood, where they provided vivid and engaging commentary during the Australian Open.

Dan Lonergan, a fellow sports presenter, shared heartfelt words about Hansen following his passing. “On Thursday night the sports media industry lost one of the best and most respected in the industry; the great Clarke Hansen who had a fine career for many years with the ABC in the 1970s, 80s and 90s,” he said.

Lonergan highlighted Hansen’s contributions to the industry, particularly his long-standing role in covering football on ABC Radio and TV. He also praised Hansen’s work in tennis, noting that he and Heywood were a formidable team.

“Clarke was a kind and warm-hearted soul who was beloved across the industry. In later years he organised an annual ABC reunion at his beloved Kooyong tennis club. A better and more decent human being very hard to find,” Lonergan added.

Fans and followers took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to Hansen. Many shared how he had been a part of their lives since childhood.

“Clarke Hansen was one of the identifiable voices and presenters from my formative childhood years,” one person wrote. “He has left a positive lasting legacy on millions of grateful people.”

Another fan shared: “A very solid performer. Great voice for radio and great knowledge. May Clarke RIP.” Others echoed similar sentiments, calling him “one of the great footy commentators” and “a truly magnificent broadcaster.”

Throughout his career, Hansen covered major sporting events, including the Olympic Games, AFL matches, and tennis tournaments. His expertise and passion for sports made him a household name in Australia.

In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Hansen was inducted into the Melbourne Cricket Ground Media Hall of Fame in 2011. This honor acknowledged his decades of dedication and excellence in sports broadcasting.

Hansen was also the father of AFL star Ashley Hansen, who played for the West Coast Eagles from 2004 to 2010. He is survived by his wife Kerry and their sons Ashley and Chris.

Hansen’s passing marks the end of an era for Australian sports broadcasting. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of broadcasters and fans alike.
