The Persistent Focus on Cognitive Tests
President Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized his cognitive test results, claiming they prove his mental sharpness. However, a recent analysis suggests that this focus is not yielding the desired effect, as more people begin to question his mental fitness for office.
Steve Benen, a long-time contributor for MS NOW and producer for Rachel Maddow, has written about Trump’s obsession with cognitive tests. He highlights how the president seems fascinated by these exams, despite appearing to misunderstand their purpose. According to Benen, Trump has often boasted about passing tests designed to detect dementia, mental deterioration, and neurodegenerative diseases.
A Public Display of Confidence
During a recent event in Florida, Trump once again brought up his cognitive tests, delivering an extended commentary to a supportive crowd. He suggested that his predecessor, Barack Obama, would fail such tests, making a rather disparaging remark about Obama’s intelligence. This kind of public statement has become a regular occurrence for the former president.
Benen also pointed out that Trump’s repeated emphasis on passing these tests may indicate underlying concerns about his own cognitive health. The fact that he has taken so many tests in a short period could signal that those around him are worried about his possible decline. Additionally, Trump has often acted as if passing these tests means he is the smartest person on Earth, which is a clear misunderstanding of the tests’ purpose.
Shifting Public Perception
Despite Trump’s efforts to highlight his cognitive test results, it appears that he is not convincing the public. A new poll from Pew Research indicates that a significant number of Americans no longer believe that Trump’s brain is as “perfect” as he claims. The data shows a decline in public perception, with the percentage of Americans considering Trump mentally sharp dropping from 55% in November 2024 to 44% currently.
This decline is not limited to any one political group. It includes Democrats, independents, and even some Republican voters. Benen notes that Trump’s fixation on cognitive tests does not seem to be persuading anyone, and he concludes that if the president wants to reassure the public of his mental fitness, he will need to find a different approach.
