Don’t Do This When You’re Ready to Go Grey

Embracing the Silver: A Guide to Going Grey

Each week, Good Weekend’s how-to column offers expert advice on navigating modern life’s challenges. This week, we explore the topic of going grey and what it means in today’s society.

For many women, the decision to stop dyeing their hair is not as simple as it sounds. According to Jules Peacocke, director of Sydney-based silver specialist salon Lily Jackson, there is a significant cultural resistance to embracing grey hair. This resistance, she explains, stems from deep-rooted societal expectations that place a high value on youth and beauty. Industry estimates suggest that around three-quarters of Australian women dye their hair, often to hide grey strands that are perceived as signs of aging and irrelevance.

In contrast, men with silver hair rarely face the same pressure to maintain a youthful appearance. They are less likely to spend hours in a salon every few weeks for touch-ups, which can cost hundreds of dollars. This disparity highlights the different standards placed on men and women when it comes to aging and appearance.

Peacocke, a 55-year-old woman who stopped dyeing her hair 15 years ago, has been advocating for “grey transitioning” for two decades. She sees this choice as an act of rebellion against societal norms and part of a growing movement. Her goal is to help women embrace their natural hair in a way that is both beautiful and fashionable, with a strong aesthetic appeal.

How to Avoid the “Skunk Line”

One of the main concerns when transitioning to grey hair is avoiding the dreaded “skunk line” – the visible regrowth of white or grey hair. To prevent this, Peacocke recommends booking a consultation with a specialist when the regrowth is about two to three centimeters long. During this consultation, the specialist will assess the amount and location of grey hair, as each person’s situation is unique.

The process typically involves softening or blending the regrowth with the dyed hair until it grows out. This can take between 12 to 15 months and require four or five salon visits. Women have the option to embrace their natural hair or enhance their silver streaks for a more dramatic look.

There is also an “instant” method available, which involves bleaching the dyed hair and then coloring it to a grey tone. However, Peacocke warns that this approach can be damaging to the hair and is not suitable for brunettes. It is also quite expensive, with costs ranging from $2500 per day at salons like Lily Jackson.

The Importance of a Great Haircut

When you finally go grey, Peacocke emphasizes the importance of getting an incredible haircut. A well-chosen style can make a significant difference in how you look, helping you appear younger rather than older.

Transitioning to grey at home is possible, but it requires some effort. Peacocke suggests using store-bought temporary products that wash out, which can help you gradually transition to your natural hair color. You’ll need to keep using these products until the grey reaches the desired length. Alternatively, you can stop dyeing your hair and cover the regrowth with retouch sprays or powders.

Another option is to cut your hair very short when the grey band appears. This bold move can be seen as a small act of defiance against traditional beauty standards.
