Major Update: Tamim Iqbal Reveals New Bangladesh Tournament

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s New Initiative

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has initiated a significant architectural transformation in its domestic cricket circuit with the introduction of the 2nd XI Championship. This innovative move aims to expand playing opportunities for cricketers who are not part of the national team and to strengthen the country’s overall cricket system.

Tamim Iqbal, the President of the BCB, confirmed the plans, highlighting that the new competition will act as a feeder system for the National Cricket League, which is the country’s premier red-ball tournament. The initiative is designed to address the current limitations in the structure of domestic cricket, where only a limited number of players are accommodated.

Increased Opportunities for Domestic Players

According to Tamim, the current structure centers around a specific segment of players who participate in various tournaments such as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Bangladesh Cup (BCL), and the National Cricket League (NCL). He pointed out that these players are involved in 5-6 tournaments, while those from lower division teams are not given sufficient opportunities to develop.

Tamim emphasized that players from the third, second, and first divisions do not have other tournaments to showcase their skills except for the ones they already play. As a result, the country has not been able to produce many players from these divisions who can make it to the national team.

Structure and Benefits of the New System

The introduction of the 2nd XI Championship aims to fill this gap by providing a larger platform for players. Tamim explained that all teams participating in the National Cricket League will have two squads: the First XI and the Second XI. This will significantly increase participation.

He stated:

“From now on when the NCL starts we will have Chittagong first XI and second XI. We will have Dhaka first XI and second XI and similarly for all the teams… When we introduce the Second XI, what we are doing is we are introducing roughly another 100-150 or 200 cricketers into the mix.”

This system will also benefit players returning from injuries. Tamim used the example of Taskin Ahmed, stating that it would allow injured players to gradually regain match fitness. He mentioned that when Taskin returns from an injury, he could play in the Second XI, where he can build up his stamina slowly.

Tamim also referenced Jofra Archer, who played his first game in the Second XI after returning from an injury. He concluded that the BCB, along with other stakeholders, is looking to introduce the competition soon.

“So we have all made a collective decision and Inshallah we will start from this season itself.”
