Ben Hunt unveils NRL plans for 2024

Ben Hunt’s Determination to Extend His NRL Career

Ben Hunt’s passion for rugby league remains as strong as ever, which is why he is nearing a one-year contract extension with the Brisbane Broncos. The 36-year-old utility player shared his thoughts on the potential deal, saying, “It’s pretty close. We’re working through it and hoping to probably have it done in the next couple of weeks.”

With an impressive 364 NRL games under his belt, Hunt is now in contention to join the elite company of Cameron Smith, who has played over 400 premiership games. Hunt expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “I’m really excited. I love this club and I’m very grateful that they’re gonna give me the opportunity to go around for another year.”

He also emphasized that he still has a lot to offer, saying, “I definitely feel like I’ve still got plenty to give, so I’m glad we could work something out. I’m just taking it year by year at the moment.”

A Valued Asset in the Modern NRL

Despite the arrival of Parramatta playmaker Jonah Pezet in 2027 and the emergence of young talent Tom Duffy as a long-term halfback, Hunt’s versatility continues to make him an essential part of the team. He can play five-eighth, half, and hooker, which makes him a valuable asset.

The new NRL rules regarding the six-man bench have also benefited Hunt, as he described it as “like the old backup quarterback on the bench,” adding with a grin, “It’s good to be able to come off the bench and make an impact when needed.”

Staying Fit and Focused

Hunt recently returned from a knee injury and is currently playing in a halfback role. Despite this, he feels his body is in good shape and is eager to contribute. “I’m still just really enjoying my footy. I know I just got back from an injury, but outside of that the rest of my body’s feeling good and I still feel like I can contribute.”

He also highlighted his enthusiasm for training and being part of the team. “I love being in this arena. I love coming to training every day and being around the team. While that drive’s still there and I feel like I can contribute, I want to go on.”

Preparing for the Upcoming Match

The Broncos are set to face the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday following two consecutive losses. Hunt, who made a return from a knee injury in the heavy loss to Manly, will take on a bench role this week as captain Adam Reynolds comes back from a concussion absence.

“Reyno coming back’s only a boost for our team,” Hunt said. “Any player we can get back at the moment is good for us, so getting the skipper back in there to lead us around will be good.”

He added, “I can fall back into a bit of a utility role and get put in wherever.” This flexibility ensures that Hunt remains a key player for the Broncos, no matter the circumstances.
