Ivan Cleary’s bold move for Dylan Edwards in Origin selection clash with Tedesco

Ivan Cleary Stands by Dylan Edwards Amid Calls for James Tedesco

Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has come out in support of fullback Dylan Edwards, defending him against growing calls for James Tedesco to replace him in the NSW Blues squad for the upcoming State of Origin series. The debate has intensified after Tedesco delivered a standout performance in a recent match, prompting discussions about his potential return to the No.1 jersey.

Tedesco’s recent display was impressive, as he scored and set up a try in a hard-fought win over the Titans. His strong form has led many to believe that he could be the ideal choice for the Blues, especially after being absent from the team since Game 1 in 2024. However, Cleary has taken an unexpected stance, advocating for Edwards despite the criticism.

Edwards had the chance to respond to the pressure this week, but his impact was less noticeable in the Panthers’ 30-18 victory over the Raiders. Despite this, he still managed to accumulate 257 metres, six tackle breaks, and one linebreak. While his performance may not have been as dominant as expected, Cleary remains confident in his abilities.

Speaking after the game, Cleary expressed his belief that Edwards is close to his best form. “It’s a good problem. Dylan is in incredible form, and I’ve seen him play at his best, and he’s pretty close to it,” Cleary said. He added, “If we’re talking about taking Dylan Edwards out of the Origin team, then geez, it must be going well. I’ll just say that. Teddy is playing incredibly; he always has, but there was a decision made for Dylan to come in, in place of him, and since then, he hasn’t done much wrong.”

A Season of Challenges for Edwards

Edwards had a strong showing in the 2024 State of Origin series, stepping in for the Blues during Games 2 and 3 under then-coach Michael Maguire. However, his performance in the 2025 series did not live up to expectations. Cleary revealed that Edwards was carrying a shoulder injury throughout the season, which may have affected his performance.

“I came off the back of shoulder surgery (in late 2024), so I probably pushed him too early, and he struggled a bit,” Cleary admitted. “He still ended up playing in a prelim. He was a huge part of our team and made the Australian team. He’s been one of our best three players every week. Have I talked him up enough?”

Cleary’s comments highlight the challenges Edwards has faced this season and his resilience in continuing to perform despite the injury. With the Origin selection process approaching, Cleary’s support for Edwards adds another layer to the ongoing debate about who should represent the Blues.

Key Positions in Question

NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley is facing several difficult decisions as the team prepares for the upcoming series. The left-wing position is one of the most contentious, with Mark Nawaqanitawase injured and Zac Lomax moving to rugby. This creates an opportunity for other players to step up.

The second-row battle is also a point of interest, with Liam Martin set to miss Game 1. These uncertainties add to the complexity of Daley’s selection process as he looks to build a strong and cohesive team.
