Leadership Amidst Change
Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has made it clear that he is determined to guide the club through the challenges following the unexpected departure of Michael Voss. His commitment to leading the team remains unwavering, even in the face of uncertainty.
Cripps addressed the media in the car park before the club press conference and later provided a more formal statement during the official event. The news of Voss’ resignation came as a surprise to many, with the dual Brownlow Medallist being one of the first to learn about the decision.
Voss had announced his resignation to general manager Chris Davies in Brisbane on Friday, and the news was released early Tuesday morning. This sudden change has left many players and fans wondering about the future direction of the club.
A Commitment to the Season
Despite the upheaval, Cripps emphasized his dedication to the current season. He highlighted that he is contracted until next year and is fully committed to playing through the remaining 14 rounds.
“I am not going to just wave the white flag and waste a year, there’s a lot of footy to be played this year,” Cripps said. “The privilege to play AFL, any game of AFL, is a massive honour. There’s so many people in the world that would love to play any game of footy.”
He added that this honor never fades, especially for the Carlton football club. “That never gets lost on me and especially for this footy club, I am going to lead it the same way I’ve been doing it for the last six to eight years. Wear the jumper with pride and keep going for it.”

Coping with the Loss
Cripps admitted that he was still trying to absorb the news of Voss’ exit. However, he praised his former coach for the way he handled the intense scrutiny throughout his tenure.
“I was shocked, it’s early in the year and I think everyone that’s watched footy this year in terms of the attention around him and the way he’s handled himself,” he said. “I just couldn’t speak highly enough of a person, who through a lot of adversity, showed up so well as a leader for us as players.”
He expressed his disbelief at how quickly things unfolded. “I didn’t think it was going to happen like this, shocked is one way (to describe it). I am just trying to absorb it all, I suppose.”

Looking Ahead
While the loss of Voss is undoubtedly a significant blow to the club, Cripps remains focused on what lies ahead. His leadership and determination are seen as crucial elements in maintaining the team’s morale and performance.
As the season progresses, the focus will be on how the club adapts to this new chapter. With Cripps at the helm, there is hope that the team can continue to compete at a high level, regardless of the changes in leadership.
The coming weeks will be critical for Carlton, and the way they navigate this transition could shape their performance for the rest of the year. For now, the emphasis remains on unity, resilience, and continuing to play with pride.
