Key Injuries and Player Updates in the NRL
Several players across the National Rugby League (NRL) are currently dealing with injuries, impacting team lineups and strategies ahead of crucial matches. South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Keaon Koloamatangi has been managing a partial tear in his knee, an injury that has also affected try-scoring record-holder Alex Johnston, who has been forced to sit out the Magic Round in Brisbane.
Koloamatangi has been wearing heavy strapping on his right knee since sustaining the injury during a win over Canterbury on April 3. He humorously remarked that Johnston might not have been able to handle the same level of pain, suggesting that the winger may lack the mental strength required to play with an injured knee.
“I’m not sure if he is strong enough mentally to play with the injured knee – he’s a winger,” Koloamatangi said. “Maybe he’s different because he needs to sprint more. I’ll be giving it to him [for not playing]. I’ve got a tear in my PCL, the good thing is you’re able to play with it, but it’s pretty painful.”
He added that while the injury is manageable, it is still quite painful. “It’s getting better each week. In a perfect world, I need some time off. I can’t needle it because it’s a ligament. I feel like I’ve got a 50-year-old knee. It’s different to the left knee [I had operated on at the end of last season]. You can play without it [the PCL].”
Despite these challenges, the Rabbitohs have received some positive news. Latrell Mitchell, who was sidelined due to a bulging disc in his back, is set to return for Friday’s clash against the Dolphins. Mitchell had previously struggled with back pain during a match against the Knights in round nine, which led to him missing the win over Cronulla. However, his return is a significant boost for both the NSW team and the Rabbitohs.
Koloamatangi noted that the playing group has gained confidence from being able to secure victories without Mitchell. “Wins are sweeter when you can do it without your big names,” he said. “It’s more of a team effort. We want Latrell there every week. But there was more urgency because we couldn’t just give Latrell the ball if we were down by a few points, and expect him to create some points. He’s someone who can change a game and win you a game.”
Other Team Updates
Cronulla Sharks have received a double boost with winger Ronaldo Mulitalo set to make his first appearance of the season against Canterbury on Thursday. Mulitalo had previously ruptured his ACL while on international duty with New Zealand last October. Jesse Ramien, who has been recovering from a knee injury, is also back in action. Meanwhile, Jayden Berrell replaces Blayke Brailey at hooker, as the Sharks’ 139-game streak came to an end due to concussion.
Manly Sea Eagles have welcomed back Jamal Fogarty, who is fit to play after recovering from a groin injury. However, Joey Walsh has been relegated to a six-man bench for their clash with Wests Tigers, with Latu Fainu named as the hooker.
Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds will make a timely return for Sunday’s clash with the Warriors after recovering from a concussion. On the other hand, the Dragons have suffered a setback with rookie halfback Kade Reed suffering a hand injury that will keep him out for the next few months.
