David Raya’s Missed Opportunity at the World Cup
David Raya, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, has been informed that he will not be starting for Spain in this summer’s World Cup. Despite his impressive performance with the Gunners, which has played a significant role in keeping them in the running for a historic Premier League and Champions League double, Raya may not get the chance to represent his country on the global stage.
Raya was instrumental in a recent match against West Ham when he made a crucial save from Mateus Fernandes, preventing the Hammers from taking a late lead. This moment could prove to be one of the most pivotal in Arsenal’s campaign, but it might not be enough to convince Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, to include Raya in the squad.
Gaizka Mendieta, a former Spanish footballer, commented on the situation, stating that Raya is pushing hard, but the manager’s decision-making process is based on trust in his selected players. “It’s very difficult for a manager to lose faith in someone he has selected,” Mendieta said. “Sometimes, it’s not about giving credit for what players are doing at their own clubs, it’s about the manager trusting someone, and he won’t drop them because it would kill their confidence.”
Mendieta also mentioned that Raya has proven his value over the years and is among the best players in the world. However, the manager’s trust in Unai Simón seems unlikely to change unless something dramatic happens. “It’s unfortunate for Raya in this situation,” Mendieta added. “I’m sure he will have his chance in the national team. It’s just a matter of being ready, being prepared, and whenever that moment comes, to take it and hold onto it.”

Arsenal’s Recruitment Plans for the Summer
Regardless of how many trophies Arsenal end the season with, the club is expected to embark on another major recruitment drive this summer. Strengthening their forward line, which has struggled for goals, especially against elite opposition, is likely to be a top priority.
Mendieta believes that Arsenal will target Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. He stated, “Arsenal will be looking at Julian Alvarez, and salary-wise, the offer would be better than Barcelona’s. I don’t think he will move, though. I don’t think he is going to go anywhere because Atletico Madrid are in a good place financially with a new owner.”
Alvarez has faced challenges throughout the season, particularly as the sole striker. However, his consistent goal-scoring has been vital for Atletico Madrid. “He’s not been happy throughout the season at times, being the sole striker is never easy,” Mendieta noted. “But the way he’s ended the season, scoring goals, has always been important for the team, scoring team goals throughout the season.”
Mendieta added that Alvarez feels very important within the team and the club. “I’m not sure, but I think he will stay at Atletico Madrid and try to win something with them. I think that’s the choice he made when he decided to go to the club where he is happy to be now.”
