Tilak Varma’s slow innings exposes Mumbai Indians’ batting crisis

A Disappointing Batting Performance by Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians faced a challenging match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, where their batting performance was among the weakest of the season. They managed to score only 147/8, which fell short of expectations. The difficult ground conditions and an unexpected rain shower further complicated matters for the team. Despite these challenges, some moments from the batting lineup, particularly from Tilak Varma, were puzzling and left fans questioning his approach.

While most of the MI batters struggled to make a significant impact, Tilak’s innings stood out, but not in a positive way. He scored just 20 runs off 32 balls, with only one six in his entire knock. His strike rate of 62.50 was far from ideal and did little to move the team forward. What made this performance even more concerning was that Tilak didn’t reach his first boundary until his 25th delivery. This marked the slowest start to an innings in the Indian Premier League 2026 so far.

This performance also placed Tilak among the slowest innings in IPL history. The next slowest starts came from Ravindra Jadeja, who needed 24 balls to get his first boundary, and Tilak himself, who took 22 deliveries against Gujarat Titans before scoring a boundary. The longest record still belongs to Sourav Ganguly, who had a strike rate of 46 back in 2008. However, Tilak’s innings landed him on the list of the slowest IPL innings of 30 balls or more over the last 14 years, marking a disappointing moment for the player.

A Struggling Season and Issues Against Spin Bowling

Tilak’s performance against Kolkata Knight Riders highlighted the difficulties he has faced this season. Despite scoring 356 runs, including a century against Gujarat Titans, his overall performance has not met expectations. One of the key issues has been his struggle against spin bowling. In 10 innings against spinners, Tilak has scored only 103 runs at an average of 17 and a strike rate of 15.32.

A worrying aspect of his performance is that approximately 32% of the balls he has faced against spin have resulted in dot deliveries. Additionally, he has been dismissed six times against spin bowling, which is a significant number. These statistics raise questions about his method when facing spinners, especially given the importance of adapting to different types of bowling in the T20 format.

Looking Ahead for Mumbai Indians

With only one league match remaining for Mumbai Indians this season, Tilak’s final numbers might seem acceptable at first glance. However, some of his recent performances have sparked concerns about his approach, particularly against spin bowling. While other MI players like Rohit Sharma (15 off 13 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (15 off six deliveries), and Hardik Pandya (26 off 27 balls) contributed more effectively, Tilak’s struggles continue to be a point of discussion.

His performance against KKR serves as a reminder of the challenges he has faced this season and the need for improvement, especially when it comes to handling spin bowling. As the season draws to a close, fans will be watching closely to see if Tilak can find a way to turn things around in the final match.
