Al Roker didn’t hesitate to playfully tease John Travolta during a recent episode of Today. The 71-year-old meteorologist took the opportunity to mock the actor’s controversial beret, which had recently gone viral at the Cannes Film Festival.
On the May 20 episode of Today, Willie Geist conducted an interview with Travolta and his daughter, Ella. However, it was Al Roker who stole the show by appearing on screen wearing a white beret that matched Travolta’s black hat.
“Al!” Travolta exclaimed with a laugh.
“Oui oui monsieur,” Roker joked, adding a French accent. Travolta encouraged him to “go for it, man.”
“I’m being directed by an award-winning director. I like it!” Roker quipped, then added, “What’s my motivation, John?”

Travolta’s decision to wear a beret was not just a fashion choice—it was a deliberate effort to embrace his new role as a director. He is making his directorial debut in Propeller One-Way Night Coach, and he wanted to make sure his wardrobe reflected this significant milestone in his career.
“I have over 50 years of me at events and happenings, and I can’t tell the difference with what I wore or look,” he explained to Geist. “‘What year is that? What movie is that?’ And then I said, ‘You know what, I’m making a directorial debut.’”
After searching online for “directors and berets,” Travolta found that the accessory was a great way to embody his new identity.
“I said, ‘I’m not an actor this time, I’m a director.’ Show up like a director,” he said. “So I did that, and that’s really the simplicity of it.”

During an interview with CNN on May 18, Travolta elaborated on his reasoning.
“I said, ‘I’m a director this time. You’re an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director,’ he emphasized. “So I looked up pictures from the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s, and the old-school directors wore berets, and the glasses, and I thought, ‘That’s what I’m doing. I’m doing an homage to being a director, so I’m going to play the part of being a director.’”

Travolta’s commitment to his role extended beyond just the beret. He also made sure to adopt the appearance of a classic director, drawing inspiration from the styles of past filmmakers. His goal was to create a visual representation of his transition from actor to director.

However, Travolta’s recent appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival sparked another wave of attention—not for his directorial efforts, but for his seemingly transformed face. Fans speculated that he may have undergone plastic surgery after his unrecognizable look went viral.
Cosmetic injector Eric Nietzel, RN, shared his insights with OK! magazine, stating that Travolta appears to have had a facelift and fillers.
“His jawline is super snatched and his cheeks are lifted compared to where he was at, which is not something that’s just going to be injectables or aesthetics alone,” Nietzel explained. “It’s definitely a facelift of some sort, maybe a small neck lift…he’s got to have had some skin resurfacing [too] because even with a facelift, you need to have skin resurfacing and skin retexturizing.”
While Travolta has not publicly addressed these claims, his recent appearances suggest a noticeable change in his physical appearance. Whether this is due to natural aging, skincare, or cosmetic procedures remains a topic of speculation among fans and media alike.
