Anne Hathaway’s Intense Prep for Roles Leaves Directors Flabbergasted

Anne Hathaway’s Dedication to Her Craft

Anne Hathaway is known for her deep commitment to her acting process. Before the cameras roll, she spends a significant amount of time researching and studying the script. This thorough approach can sometimes be off-putting for filmmakers who are not used to her level of questioning.

In an interview with director David Lowery on The A24 Podcast, the 43-year-old Oscar winner shared her perspective on this method. She explained that she interrogates everything during pre-production. Even lines she loves, she asks every single question. She holds everything up to the light and pokes holes in everything. She believes this has occasionally frightened some directors.

Hathaway makes it clear that she does this because she doesn’t want to ask questions once they are on set. “When we’re on set, I want to be your first lieutenant,” she said. “I want to execute your vision. I just want to hit the ground running and know exactly what we’re doing and why. We don’t have time for my questions then.”

Lowery, the 45-year-old filmmaker, recalled their experience working on Mother Mary. He mentioned that even though they knew they weren’t changing anything, they went through every single line. Hathaway added, “Some lines more than once [laughing]!”

The duo reunited to promote the fact that their ghostly psychological thriller is now available for rent or purchase via A24. The film features original songs by Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and FKA Twigs. Despite its artistic merits, the movie only earned $3 million from its $20 million budget.

Other notable stars in the film include Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Alba Baptista, the wife of Chris Evans. The film received a 70% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 179 reviews.

In contrast, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was a major success, grossing $548 million with a $100 million budget since its worldwide release in May.

Hathaway has worked with many prominent directors throughout her career, including Garry Marshall, Ang Lee, Jonathan Demme, Barry Levinson, Tim Burton, Christopher Nolan, Nancy Meyers, Todd Haynes, and Robert Zemeckis.

Upcoming Projects and Roles

Audiences can soon see Hathaway as Penelope, the wife of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), in Christopher Nolan’s big-screen adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The film, which has a $250 million budget, will be released in IMAX theaters on July 17. Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o are also set to star in the Universal Pictures epic.

Hathaway will also portray Ewan McGregor’s onscreen wife, Denise Platt, in David Robert Mitchell’s sci-fi dino flick The End of Oak Street. The film is scheduled to hit US and UK theaters on August 14.

Additionally, she will produce and star as author Verity Crawford in Michael Showalter’s big-screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2018 thriller Verity. Amazon Studios will release the film in theaters on October 2.

A Busy Career Ahead

The Emmy winner has at least 10 upcoming projects. These include a Paramount+ limited series called Fear Not, a Disney+ series titled Ella Enchanted, Adele Lim’s The Princess Diaries threequel, Jonathan Tropper’s untitled FBI wedding sting comedy, and Ron Howard’s war drama Alone at Dawn.

Hathaway began her career at the age of 18, starring in Garry Marshall’s 2001 hit comedy The Princess Diaries after Juliette Lewis turned down the role.

On a personal note, the Bulgari brand ambassador has two sons, Jonathan, who is 10 years old, and Jack, who is six. She has been married to producer-jewelry designer Adam Shulman for 13 years.
