Bruno Fernandes hits back at Roy Keane’s ‘circus act’ jabs

Bruno Fernandes has made it clear that he is not focused on individual accolades, even after a recent controversy surrounding his pursuit of the Premier League assist record. The Manchester United captain reached 20 assists for the season in a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, tying the record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. However, this achievement has sparked debate among fans and former players alike.

Roy Keane, a former Manchester United legend, expressed his frustration with the attention given to Fernandes’ assist record. During an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane criticized the team’s focus on individual achievements rather than collective success. He stated, “For it to become the main point of Man United’s performance at the weekend, I was cringing with all of them.” Keane questioned why the team celebrated an assist when they conceded two goals, saying, “What about the guy who scored the goal?”

Fernandes, however, emphasized that his primary goal is to help the team win. He acknowledged the significance of the assist record but insisted that it was not his main motivation. Speaking after being named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, he said, “It is not something that I will ever chase.” He added, “I know people can have different opinions about me but they cannot say that I am not someone that looks to the team and tries to make the team the most successful one.”

During the match against Nottingham Forest, Fernandes highlighted the importance of teamwork. He told Sky Sports, “Everyone knew it was important that I could get another assist at least and they’ve been trying everything they can to score from my passes.” While he admitted there were moments when he should have passed instead of shooting, he remained proud of the assist and even more so of the win. “I’m very happy for the assist but more than that I’m very happy for the win and to finish the season on a high.”

Fernandes also reflected on the recognition he received for the Premier League Player of the Season award. “It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me [to be considered for Premier League Player of the Season]. I want collective awards more than anything but knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, I’m very grateful and I’m very happy with it.”

Keane, however, believes that the focus on individual achievements is misplaced, especially since Manchester United did not compete for silverware this season. He argued, “If you’re on the back of winning stuff and players are getting individual stuff then fantastic.” But he added, “Man United’s priority this weekend was Bruno getting assists. For one player to get bogged down with assists and his team aren’t winning anything, that’s my issue.”

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick praised Fernandes for his leadership and consistency. He said, “To be the captain of Manchester United and lead like Bruno has for such a long time… I was at the club [when he joined] originally and to see him walk through the door and evolve and lead the club moving forward is a real joy.” Carrick highlighted Fernandes’ dedication both on and off the pitch, noting, “He’s there every single day, he looks after himself and does everything right. Mentally he’s there and he takes the responsibility of looking after the young players and leading by example.”

Fans and analysts continue to debate the balance between individual achievements and team success. While Fernandes’ record-breaking performances have drawn praise, some argue that the focus should remain on winning trophies. As the season comes to an end, the conversation around Manchester United’s future remains centered on how to return to the top of English football.
