Chelsea’s Final Premier League Match: Key Players in Doubt
Calum McFarlane, the interim manager of Chelsea, has expressed cautious optimism regarding the fitness of key players ahead of the club’s final Premier League match of the season against Sunderland on Sunday. Among those in question is Joao Pedro, who missed the recent 2-1 victory over Tottenham due to an injury sustained before the game.
Joao Pedro, who has been a crucial figure for the team this season, scoring 15 league goals, has now returned to training and is being considered for inclusion in the matchday squad. His potential return would be a significant boost for the Blues as they aim to secure a place in next season’s Conference League.
In addition to Joao Pedro, Levi Colwill is also expected to feature in the upcoming match. Colwill was rested in midweek following his recovery from a major knee injury. McFarlane confirmed that both players trained on Friday, indicating positive progress.
‘Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill, they both trained today,’ McFarlane said during his pre-match press conference on Friday. ‘Still got another day to see, but both promising, both hopeful that they’ll be fit for Sunday.’
Managing Reece James’ Fitness
Another player under close scrutiny is club captain Recce James, who was on the bench in the midweek game. McFarlane emphasized the need for caution with the 26-year-old after he recently suffered a hamstring injury.
‘Reece has trained today,’ the interim manager added. ‘We’re playing it day by day with Reece. He’s fit, he’s in good condition. But we just know that we have to manage Reece correctly over the last couple of games.’
McFarlane highlighted the physical demands of the previous match against a strong opponent, which took a toll on the players. He explained that the decision to rest James was made to avoid risking his fitness for the final game of the season.
‘He played, obviously, a lot of minutes in the final which, again, I go back to, it was a tough game against a really good side so, it’s going to take a lot out of you. We didn’t want to risk him on Tuesday, we felt like we had enough to see the game out, which was correct, we’re hoping to have Reece back on Sunday.’
League Position and Implications
Chelsea currently sit in eighth place in the league table, and a win against Sunderland would be vital to ensure their participation in next season’s Conference League. The outcome of the match could also affect the standings, as Sunderland has the opportunity to leapfrog the Blues into eighth if they secure a victory. Meanwhile, ninth-place Brentford could drop points against Liverpool, which could further impact the league positions.
Looking Ahead
As the final match of the season approaches, the focus remains on the fitness of key players and the tactical decisions that will shape the outcome. With the stakes high, McFarlane and his team are working to ensure that every available player is in the best possible condition to compete.
