A New Era for PNG Chiefs
A premiership-winning coach with a deep connection to the blue and gold of the Parramatta Eels is now set to make his mark on the PNG Chiefs. The club believes that Luke Burt’s appointment as an assistant coach will be a crucial piece in their 2028 puzzle.
Burt, one of the most decorated players in Parramatta Eels history, has been appointed as an assistant coach at the Chiefs. His career with the Eels spanned 14 seasons, during which he made 264 appearances and scored 124 tries. He is the club’s all-time leading tryscorer and represented the Eels in both the 2001 and 2009 Grand Finals.
In addition to his role as an assistant coach, Burt will also take on a specialist position as the club’s goal-kicking coach. This role leverages his reputation for accuracy under high pressure, a trait that defined much of his playing career.
A Coaching Journey Fueled by Success
After transitioning into coaching, Burt held roles with the Eels and the Gold Coast Titans. He stepped up as interim head coach in 2019 before joining the Burleigh Bears in 2020. There, he steadily built towards something special.
In 2023, Burt was handed the head coaching reins and delivered a Minor Premiership and a Grand Final appearance in his first season. The following year, he led the team to a premiership victory, solidifying his place as a successful coach.
This impressive coaching resume caught the attention of PNG Chiefs General Manager of Football, Michael Chammas. A recent visit to the country further cemented the decision to bring Burt on board.
“He had an exceptional career as a player, but what excites us the most is what he has done as a coach,” Chammas said in the club’s official statement. “He has shown he can develop players and build a winning culture through what he has done at the Burleigh Bears.”
Burt and his partner Madelin recently visited PNG and were captivated by the experience. They are eager to contribute to the Chiefs’ success alongside head coach Willie Peters.
