Gautam Gambhir Set to Replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I Captain

Pressure on Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy

India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is facing significant pressure regarding his position in the national team. This comes after a prolonged period where his performance in T20 cricket has not met expectations. Reports suggest that the Indian selectors are closely examining his role and may even consider dropping him as captain in the coming months, depending on future results.

Since the Asia Cup 2025, things have been challenging for Suryakumar. Despite leading India to victory in the tournament, he managed an average of just 18 runs across six matches. The situation didn’t improve in the T20I series against Australia, where he scored only 84 runs from four games. These numbers are far from what is expected from a captain.

The T20 World Cup 2026 also did not go as planned for the Mumbai batter. He scored 242 runs in nine innings, averaging 30.25 with a strike rate of 136.72. These figures fall below his usual standards, raising concerns about his form.

Adding to the pressure was his performance in the IPL 2026. For the Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar scored only 210 runs in 12 matches, with an average of 17.50. This lack of consistency has significantly impacted his confidence.

Selectors Reportedly Unhappy

According to reports, none of the five national selectors are fully convinced that Suryakumar still fits into India’s T20I playing XI. There was hope that the IPL 2026 would help him regain his form, but instead, his performance continued to decline.

A senior BCCI source told PTI:

“Initially, the selectors thought that IPL would help Suryakumar regain form like in the previous edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely, there hasn’t been any technical course correction in his game.

“Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths and he has no answer. Selectors don’t see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that.”

The selectors are reportedly planning for the long term, especially considering the Olympics 2028 and T20 World Cup 2028. The question of Suryakumar’s future is now being asked, rather than postponed.

Gautam Gambhir’s Support Could Still Matter

Despite the criticism, India head coach Gautam Gambhir could still play a crucial role in Suryakumar’s future. Gambhir and SKY are believed to have a strong relationship, which has helped maintain a positive atmosphere in the dressing room for years.

Additionally, Suryakumar has led India to several important wins in T20 cricket, so the final decision may not come immediately. However, if another poor series emerges, the team management might need to make a significant change.

Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer in the Race

If India decides to move on from Suryakumar as captain, young batter Tilak Varma and senior player Shreyas Iyer are being considered as potential replacements.

The source mentioned:

“Don’t rule out Tilak if Surya is sacked. There’s a reason that Tilak has been made captain for tri-nation A series where selectors would get to see his leadership skills.”

Tilak’s recent rise in Indian cricket and the leadership opportunities he has received at the domestic level have impressed the selectors. It seems that Indian cricket could soon witness another major leadership change in the T20 format. Whether this happens quickly or is delayed will depend on performance.
