A silver screen star, known for her remarkable career and enduring marriage to the late Sidney Poitier, was recently spotted making a rare outing in Los Angeles. This actress, who shared a life with one of cinema’s most iconic figures, has been seen enjoying a quiet moment at a Beverly Hills hotspot.
Her journey in the entertainment industry began with roles alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood. She worked with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and later met her future husband on the set of their 1969 film, The Lost Man. The couple had two children together and married in 1976, remaining devoted to each other until Poitier’s passing in 2022.
Despite her successful acting career, she chose to step away from the spotlight to focus on her family. Her decision to prioritize family life over her career has been a significant part of her story.

However, her path took a different turn when she met Sidney Poitier. In a 1998 PBS documentary titled Sidney Poitier: One Bright Light, she reflected on her decision to step back from her career. “I guess my career was very short-lived,” she said. “I started out making the French films and then when I met Sidney… I knew that this was the man of my life.”
She explained that while Poitier’s career was more prominent, she felt that prioritizing their family life was more important. “I wanted to have the family that I never had. I wanted to be the mother to my children that, you know, I never had.”
A Love That Lasted
Shimkus was drawn to Poitier not just for his looks but for his integrity and loyalty. “The thing that attracted me to him the most, I think, is his integrity and his honesty… his loyalty to his family,” she said. “He’s just an amazing human being.”
Their marriage lasted 45 years, and they had two daughters, Anika Poitier and Sydney Tamiia Poitier. Poitier’s previous marriage to Juanita Hardy resulted in four daughters, but his relationship with Shimkus was deeply cherished.
The couple’s bond was evident in the way they raised their children. His daughters often recalled how he played along when they dressed him up as children. “He’d be on location and we’d put barrettes in his hair,” they told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’d make him call room service. And he’d have to open the door with pink barrettes and lipstick on.”
A Legacy of Love and Family
Poitier passed away at the age of 94 due to heart failure, Alzheimer’s dementia, and prostate cancer. His family released a statement expressing their gratitude for the time they spent with him. “To us Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist, and a man of incredible grace and moral fortitude, he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and adoring father, and a man who always put family first.”
His legacy continues through his family, who remember him as a guiding light in their lives. “His smile was healing, his hugs the warmest refuge, and his laughter was infectious.”
