Smart Drugs Seized as Student Health Risks Rise

Rise in Smart Drug Seizures in Scotland

The use of so-called smart drugs has become a growing concern in Scotland, with an increasing number of these substances being seized by regulators. These drugs, often used to enhance cognitive function, are raising alarms among health professionals and educators due to their potential risks.

Increased Seizures Highlight Growing Concerns

According to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA), the number of smart drugs intercepted at UK borders has risen significantly. Thousands of pills were confiscated by the MHRA, with many of these drugs either found in Scotland or intended for transport into the country. The exact locations of these seizures have not been disclosed, but the increase in cases is clear.

These drugs are typically developed to treat conditions such as ADHD and Alzheimer’s, but they are increasingly being used by healthy individuals who believe they can improve their attention span, memory, and motivation. This misuse poses serious health risks, particularly when the drugs are obtained without proper medical supervision.

Commonly Seized Smart Drugs

Modafinil is one of the most commonly seized smart drugs. Originally designed to treat narcolepsy, a condition that causes sudden and uncontrollable sleepiness, modafinil is now widely misused by students seeking a cognitive boost. In the last financial year, up to March 31, the MHRA reported seizing 1,200 doses of modafinil, compared to 500 the previous year and 1,020 in 2023/24.

Another drug frequently targeted is piracetam, which is used to treat cognitive disorders. Like modafinil, it is a prescription-only medication. The MHRA seized 1,000 doses of piracetam in the last year, a significant increase from the 360 doses seized the year before.

Legal and Health Implications

While it is legal to purchase these drugs, it is illegal to supply or sell them without a valid prescription. This legal framework aims to prevent misuse and ensure that only those who need the medication receive it under medical supervision.

Barbara Sahakian, a professor of clinical neuropsychology at the University of Cambridge, highlights the role of peer pressure in driving the use of smart drugs in competitive environments. She notes that students may feel pressured to use these substances to keep up with their peers, even if they are not fully aware of the risks involved.

In a conversation at St Andrews University, a student shared her concerns about falling behind in exams if she did not use smart drugs. She mentioned seeing other students passing these drugs to each other in the library before exams, highlighting the normalization of this practice.

Risks of Online Purchases

A 2018 study revealed that smart drugs are widely available online in the UK without a prescription. This method of distribution is particularly concerning because many of these drugs do not come from registered pharmaceutical companies. As a result, users may not be getting the genuine product they expect, or they could be exposed to harmful substances.

Professor Sahakian warns that students buying these drugs online are often unaware of what they are actually receiving. “They might be getting something else entirely,” she explains. “We don’t know the long-term effects of using these prescription-only medications in healthy adolescents and young adults.”

Ongoing Monitoring and Enforcement

Andy Morling, deputy director of enforcement at the MHRA, emphasized the importance of intercepting these drugs before they reach consumers. He stated that modafinil and piracetam were identified and seized at the border, preventing them from being supplied in the UK. Importers were reminded of their legal obligations to comply with medicines regulations.

As the use of smart drugs continues to rise, the need for education, regulation, and awareness remains critical. With more students turning to these substances for academic advantage, the potential health risks must not be overlooked.
