A snake catcher has raised an urgent warning to pet owners following a distressing incident in Queensland. Susan Wehmeier, a dedicated professional in the field, was called to a home in Norman Gardens, Rockhampton, where a carpet python had consumed a family’s cherished kitten. The incident occurred at 9:30 am yesterday, marking a deeply emotional moment for both the pet owner and Wehmeier.
“I love cats, this was just as heartbreaking for me as it was for them,” Wehmeier shared. “I don’t want to see any animal taken like that.”
The process of handling the situation took approximately 10 minutes for Wehmeier to safely bag the snake before relocating it to a nearby creek. She emphasized the challenges involved in such situations, noting that pythons can be particularly defensive when full.
“They’re super defensive when full because they can’t move,” she explained. “I had to assess where he was, where his head was and try to avoid the bites. They don’t want to be disturbed.”
To raise awareness about the presence of pythons in the area, Wehmeier shared a video of the entire process on Facebook. The footage aimed to educate her followers on how to handle similar encounters and the importance of vigilance.
After releasing the snake at the creek, Wehmeier noted that it took around 20 minutes to get the reptile out of the bag. This highlights the careful approach required when dealing with these creatures, especially when they are in a vulnerable state.

“There’s one spot that gets heaps of carpet pythons,” she said. “They’re cruising around, if you do have little animals, lock them up for the night.”
She stressed the importance of keeping pets secure, especially during the early hours of the morning when such incidents are more likely to occur. Wehmeier also shared another recent case where a carpet python tragically ate a pet duck.
