Anne Hathaway’s Secret Health Condition
Anne Hathaway, the acclaimed actress known for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, has revealed a personal health challenge that she has been living with for the past 10 years. The 43-year-old star disclosed that she has been legally blind in one eye due to early-onset cataract, which affected her vision significantly from the age of 30 to 40.
Hathaway shared this information while speaking on a New York Times Podcast in April, where she described the impact of her condition. “I was half blind for 10 years,” she said. “I had early-onset cataract. It impacted my vision so much that I was legally blind out of my left eye.”
She underwent surgery to correct the issue after a decade of dealing with the condition. “I didn’t realise how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the spectrum,” she added.
Understanding Cataracts
Cataracts are described as the “clouding of the lens of your eye” according to Health Direct. The website explains that “cataracts develop when proteins in the lens are damaged and clump together,” which reduces the amount of light that can pass through the lens to the retina. This condition is the leading cause of blindness worldwide.
Fans of the Hollywood star were taken aback by her revelation, taking to social media to commend her for continuing to work on major films while managing her condition. One fan wrote, “The fact she powered through 10 years of major movies with that and never once complained or used it for press … actual legend behaviour.” Another fan commented, “The amount of movies she did during those 10 years and she never mentioned it.”
A Decade of Filmography
During the decade she was battling with the illness, Hathaway starred in numerous films, including Les Misérables, Interstellar, The Intern, Ocean’s 8, The Hustle, and The Witches, among others. Her ability to continue working despite her condition has been widely praised by fans and colleagues alike.
Recent Projects and Reunions
Hathaway recently appeared in The Devil Wears Prada 2, although it seems her vision had returned to normal by then. The original cast, including Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt, reunited for the film, alongside other actors like Simone Ashley and Australian Patrick Brammall.
Hathaway revived her role as Andy Sachs, the assistant-turned-features-editor who reunites with her old boss, Miranda Priestly, played by Streep. The film marks a significant return for the original cast and has generated a lot of excitement among fans.
