Jai Arrow’s Impact on the Queensland Maroons Camp
Queensland Maroons fullback Kalyn Ponga has shared insights into the influence of Jai Arrow within the team following his decision to join the camp ahead of Origin I. Arrow, who recently retired from the NRL after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), was invited by coach Billy Slater to be part of the team in Sydney this week.
Arrow, a former Maroon who played 12 matches for the team during his career, joined some of his former teammates for dinner on Monday night. Ponga reflected on the event, highlighting how the team celebrated Arrow’s contributions.
“He’s in there now. We went out for dinner, he shared some words and we celebrated his career really as a Maroon,” Ponga said on Nine’s 100% Footy.
Billy Slater also addressed the group, speaking about Arrow’s qualities that have been evident over the years. Ponga noted that it was heartening to see Arrow in good spirits and enjoying his time in the camp.
New Spine Combination for the Maroons
Ponga is set to form a new-look spine combination for the Maroons in Game One, with Sam Walker taking the halfback position. Walker will join Cameron Munster and Harry Grant in key roles. This marks Walker’s debut as he replaces the injured Tom Dearden.
Ponga also edged out Reece Walsh for the No.1 jersey, indicating confidence in the new lineup. The team is looking forward to the challenges ahead, with Ponga emphasizing the importance of the forwards in setting the tone for the game.

Focus on the Forwards
While the spine is an important aspect of the team’s strategy, Ponga believes the success of the Maroons will ultimately depend on their forwards.
“Obviously Sammy will make his debut which is special and I’m looking forward to playing out there with him and Munny (Cameron Munster), we know what we’re going to get from Munny,” Ponga said.
“But Origin’s a game of the forwards, it’s our forwards that will lay the platform. Attack’s obviously important but you can’t go out there with that mindset too much. We’ve got to win the game and got to earn the right.”
Matchup Against the Blues
The Maroons are set to face the Blues in Sydney on Wednesday night. With Arrow’s presence adding a sense of camaraderie and motivation, the team is preparing for a challenging yet exciting match. Ponga’s comments reflect the unity and determination within the squad as they gear up for the State of Origin series.
