Penelope Cruz, 52, Faced Death During Brain Aneurysm

Penelope Cruz Shares Her Brain Aneurysm Scare During Filming of The Black Ball

Penelope Cruz, the acclaimed Spanish actress, has opened up about a terrifying health scare she experienced while filming her movie The Black Ball last year. At 52 years old, the Oscar-winning star shared during the Cannes Film Festival that she believed she was facing a life-threatening situation when she was informed of a potential brain aneurysm.

According to reports, Cruz’s doctor had advised her to take a break from filming due to the condition. A brain aneurysm is a weak, bulging area in an artery wall, and if it ruptures, it can cause dangerous bleeding into the brain. This can be life-threatening, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.

During a press conference for The Black Ball at the festival, Cruz recounted the moment she learned of the issue. “When we were about to go out to shoot the movie, I was putting on my wig, and they said, ‘Oh, apparently you have some brain aneurysm.’ I thought I was about to die. This is something that was totally surreal in my life,” she said.

Initially, Cruz thought the warning might be a joke. Despite being told to take it easy, she was determined to film the key scene and asked her doctors if she could proceed with the shoot. However, the doctors later confirmed it was a false alarm, and she was in good health. She was able to return to the set without any issues.

“The shooting was not going to stop. And for me, talking about these things is very important,” she explained. “It’s important to share information about where such characters take you – you experience these things together, yet despite all this, despite the hardship, you can move forward in life, and I think they’re the only people who knew all these details and they provided such incredible support.”

A Role That Resonated Deeply

In The Black Ball, Cruz plays cabaret singer Nene, a character that, while having minimal screen time, left a strong impression on her. The actress was drawn to the film because of its script, which she felt was meaningful and impactful.

“I don’t base my decision on the number of minutes my character is in the script. I want to be part of things that are important, that speak to me,” she said. “When I read this script, I discovered this fantastic story and I felt it would be wonderful to be part of something that’s even more important than just one more film.”

The film explores the interconnected lives of three gay men and delves into LGBTQ+ themes that deeply resonated with Cruz. She expressed how strongly she reacts to injustices, particularly when it comes to people fighting for rights that should be non-negotiable.

“I have a very strong reaction towards anything that doesn’t seem fair,” she said. “So when I see people struggling and fighting for rights that should be never questionable, that creates a very, very strong reaction in me that I need to put somewhere. And fortunately I’ve been able to put it in the films that I do through my characters.”

A Memorable Moment at Cannes

Cruz also reflected on the film’s warm reception at the festival, particularly the 16-minute standing ovation it received. She described it as “one of the strongest, most powerful moments I have ever experienced at the festival.” For her, the experience was not just about the applause but about the emotional connection the audience felt with the story.

Her journey through the challenges of filming, combined with her passion for meaningful storytelling, highlights why Penelope Cruz remains a respected and influential figure in the world of cinema.
