According to Wood, the project is different from Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films because it delves deeper into a story that is mentioned only briefly in J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices, rather than adapting a crucial plotline in the already existing novel.
Recent reports surrounding ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ suggest the story may delve deeper into Sméagol’s life before he fully descended into the creature known as Gollum.
As per the synopsis, the film follows Gollum as he emerges from isolation and begins searching for the One Ring after losing it to Bilbo Baggins years earlier.
“I feel like just [recently], someone articulated what the premise of the film is… Like, the actual logline of the movie and in more detail. So, that’s cool. It’s out there in the world. So, it’s essentially following Gollum, and it’s a little bit of the backstory of Smeagol, and understanding a little bit more deeply where he came from… And then [the film is] tracking him with Rangers, who have been tasked to track him, because he’s got this sort of… he carries with him, as he’s tortured,” Wood revealed at the Vancouver Fan Expo.
Exploring New Depths in the Story
Additionally, Elijah Wood explained that the project benefits from having greater creative freedom, since the filmmakers are not carrying the same pressure that came with adapting J.R.R. Tolkien’s main trilogy.
Wood suggested that exploring material drawn from the appendices allows the team to tell a more contained story within Middle-earth without the enormous expectations attached to the original films.
He also praised the involvement of longtime franchise creatives Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, noting that their return helps maintain continuity with the original Lord of the Rings movies.

Leaked Plot Reportedly Centers On Aragorn’s Hunt
Several online reports about ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ suggest the story will take place before the events of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ and focus on Aragorn’s mission to track down Gollum.
As per the rumors, Gandalf realizes that Gollum possesses crucial knowledge about the One Ring and fears that Sauron could use that information to locate it. Aragorn, still living under the name Strider during this period, is therefore tasked with finding Gollum before Sauron’s forces can capture him first.
Andy Serkis, the director of the film and also the actor who plays Gollum, described the movie as a psychological and survival-focused adventure that focuses on the complex personality of Gollum/Sméagol trying to recover the precious ring stolen from him by Bilbo Baggins.
Furthermore, these leak reports also indicate that the movie may show more about the history of Aragorn before joining Frodo and the rest in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring.’
As a result, Jamie Dornan has officially been cast as Aragorn, rather than the original cast member, Viggo Mortensen, taking up the role again. Ian McKellen will likely return to play Gandalf, and Andy Serkis, once again, will play Gollum. The movie will hit the theatres on December 17, 2027.
