Indy 500 2026 Viewership Revealed

Overview of the 2026 Indianapolis 500

The 2026 edition of the Indianapolis 500 saw a slight decline in viewership compared to the previous year, averaging 6.635 million viewers. This is down from the 7.050 million that tuned in for the 2025 race. Despite this dip, the event still managed to secure its place as the second-most-watched Indy 500 since 2012, with peak viewership reaching 8.349 million around 4:00-4:15pm during the final stretch of the race.

The pre-race buildup for the 2026 event was less dramatic than in 2025, with no significant bumping and the Penske scandal dominating headlines. Additionally, it marked the first time since 2023 that NASCAR star Kyle Larson did not attempt the Indy-Charlotte ‘Double.’

Katherine Legge made history by becoming the sixth driver in history to start both races on the same day, although she is not a full-time competitor in either series.

Viewership and Market Performance

This year’s Indianapolis 500 was not subject to any blackout, and the top market for viewership was Indianapolis, Indiana, followed closely by Dayton, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky. The event experienced only a minor mid-race delay due to rain, but overall, it proceeded as scheduled.

Race Highlights and Record-Breaking Finish

Felix Rosenqvist emerged victorious in the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500, driving for Meyer Shank Racing. He made a stunning move from third to first in a one-lap shootout, passing Team Penske’s David Malukas in the final seconds of the race. This finish was the closest in the history of the Indy 500, with a margin of just 0.0233 seconds. The previous record of 0.043 seconds had stood since 1992.

Rosenqvist’s win marked a significant milestone for the 2026 IndyCar season, which is now the best start since 2008 when the split officially ended and IndyCar/Champ Car merged. The 2026 season is averaging 2.383 million viewers, representing a 10% increase from the previous year.

Notable Moments and Fan Engagement

Throughout the race, fans were treated to a variety of memorable moments, including the celebration of the Borg-Warner Trophy and the tribute to Kyle Busch during the race. The atmosphere at the track was electric, with large crowds gathering to witness the action.

Several drivers made notable appearances, including Pato O’Ward, Josef Newgarden, and Emerson Fittipaldi. The race also featured a number of familiar faces, such as A.J. Foyt and Bobby Rahal, who were present to support their teams.
