A Compelling Plot
The plot follows Ben Reilly, a washed-up drunk who is tormented by his failure to save the woman he loved years ago. He has retired from being The Spider, which has created a power vacuum that allows gangster Silvio Manfredi, also known as Silverman (played by Brendan Gleeson), to rise to power unopposed.
Silverman has a tight grip on the city, with the cops in his palm, nightclub singer Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) under his control, and the mayor (Michael Kostroff) completely under his influence. When he enlists a group of super mutants to support his cause, he gains the muscle needed to dominate the city from top to bottom.
A Hero’s Return
Faced with this situation, Reilly must put the suit back on – complete with a heavy woollen mask, fedora, leather vest, and trench coat – and fight against the forces threatening the city. Despite the physical toll and the emotional struggles, he continues to do what he believes is right.
The portrayal of Cage struggling with the after-effects of his labors, including a hangover, his growing feelings for Cat, and hallucinations caused by a mad doctor determined to uncover the source of his powers, is truly compelling. Whether one embraces or avoids this aspect of the show is a personal choice, but for many, it’s a lot of fun.
