His reaction to the car’s unveiling at the Confindustria public assembly in Rome was nothing short of dramatic. “If I were to say what I think, I would be hurting Ferrari,” he stated, highlighting his deep concern for the brand’s future.
He added, “It risks destroying a legend, and I’m deeply sorry.” This sentiment reflects a broader fear within the Ferrari community that the brand’s iconic status may be compromised by its shift towards electric vehicles.
The Luce: A New Era?
The 2027 Ferrari Luce electric car has been detailed with four electric motors, five seats, and a promise to make every driver feel like “Jimi Hendrix.” However, this vision has not been met with universal approval. The car’s design has drawn criticism, with some suggesting it lacks the essence of a traditional Ferrari.
Montezemolo went on to say, “I hope they at least remove the prancing horse from that car. It is definitely a car that at least the Chinese won’t copy,” indicating his belief that the new model does not align with the brand’s identity.
A Growing Concern
Montezemolo is not alone in his concerns. Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Matteo Salvini, echoed similar sentiments on X. He commented on the car’s high price tag of €550,000 and its aesthetic appeal, stating, “Electric, incredibly expensive… and aesthetically speaking, it speaks for itself… It looks anything but a Prancing Horse car.”
This raises questions about whether the Luce represents true innovation or a departure from Ferrari’s core values. Salvini also pondered, “And this is supposed to be ‘innovation’? I wonder what Enzo Ferrari would say…”
Design and Discontent
The involvement of former iPhone designer Jony Ive in developing the Luce through his LoveFrom consultancy has further fueled the controversy. Many Ferrari enthusiasts are vocal about their dissatisfaction, with social media posts reflecting a range of opinions.
Comments such as, “Obviously, the designers are not car enthusiasts. Fire the CEO! Better yet, fire them all,” and “One million??? For that Roomba???? Enzo is spinning in his grave!” highlight the frustration felt by many. Some have even described the design as a “global laughingstock.”

The backlash has not only affected the brand’s image but also its financial standing. Ferrari’s share price plummeted more than six per cent from €309.20 on the morning of the Luce’s launch to €290.00 by the evening’s close. As of now, the stock is trading at €283.75, indicating a significant drop in investor confidence.
