Asus unveils world’s first WiFi 8 router in Australia: ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro

Asus has officially unveiled the Asus ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro, which the company is promoting as the world’s first Wi-Fi 8 gaming router. This latest device has already gained recognition by winning a Best Choice Award at this year’s COMPUTEX Taipei International Computer Show.

The GT-BN98 Pro is built around the upcoming Wi-Fi 8 standard, also known as IEEE 802.11bn. Although Wi-Fi 8 is not yet finalized, Asus claims that the router can provide up to twice the throughput and twice the IoT coverage compared to previous-generation models. This improvement is particularly noticeable over medium-to-long distances where signals typically weaken.

According to Asus’ internal testing, this means fewer slowdowns in areas such as garages, patios, or upstairs rooms. The company also highlights that Wi-Fi 8 enhances communication between routers and connected devices, helping low-powered smart home gadgets maintain a more stable connection.

Gaming and Hardware

Asus is placing a strong emphasis on gaming with the GT-BN98 Pro, which aligns with the Republic of Gamers branding. The router features what Asus calls “AI Game Boost,” a three-level acceleration system designed to prioritize gaming traffic from the device all the way to the game server. Asus states that this feature can reduce latency by up to 34 percent.

The hardware specifications are equally impressive. The GT-BN98 Pro comes equipped with dual 10GbE ports that support link aggregation, four 2.5GbE ports, and one additional 1GbE port. There is also a dedicated 10G gaming port that automatically prioritizes gaming traffic without requiring manual configuration. On the USB front, the router includes one 5Gbps USB port and another USB 2.0 port.

The design of the router also includes a thicker aluminum top plate, an upgraded nanocarbon coating, and a redesigned airflow system that improves heat dissipation by up to 35 percent compared to the older Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000.

Like most high-end routers released in 2026, the GT-BN98 Pro offers software features such as enhanced AiProtection security tools, VLAN controls, guest networks for IoT and children’s devices, VPN support, and real-time Wi-Fi interference monitoring.

As of now, Asus has not disclosed pricing details or the full wireless specifications of the router.
