Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy in Question
Hardik Pandya’s tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) appears to be under significant scrutiny. The five-time IPL champion has faced a challenging season, securing only four wins and finishing ninth in the 2026 IPL points table. This poor performance has sparked speculation about whether he will continue as the team’s leader for the upcoming season, even if he remains with the franchise.
A report from the Indian Express indicated that MI is considering not retaining Pandya as captain for IPL 2027. The team’s camp is reportedly abuzz with discussions, with sources close to the franchise revealing that there were clear signs during the season that the management was not keen on keeping him as captain. A source shared with the publication:
“There were enough signs during the season that the team management wasn’t keen to retain him as captain. There is a clear buzz in the camp. The coaching staff was very clear in their message to the senior players that wherever they play, they need to be coachable. There were many instances where the coaching staff recommended something that was backed by data, but players didn’t follow it.”
What Lies Ahead for Hardik Pandya?
Following Rajasthan Royals’ victory over MI in their final league match, batting coach Kieron Pollard hinted at the uncertainty surrounding Pandya’s future. A source confirmed that the franchise will conduct a thorough review before making any decisions.
“There will be serious introspection and discussion in the coming days. Every option would be weighed. Many questions need to be addressed. Going ahead, can Hardik be the captain? Does he stay in the team just as a player?”
Another source added that the issue goes beyond captaincy. They highlighted that MI struggled to capitalize on opportunities that other teams managed to exploit effectively.
“We haven’t been able to use the Powerplay like some of the more successful teams this IPL. We haven’t moved with the times.”
The Long-Lasting Controversy Around Hardik Pandya
Pandya initially joined MI in 2015, spending six years with the franchise before moving to the Gujarat Titans. He led them to a title win as captain. However, a controversial trade saw him return to MI, which marked a turning point for the team.
Since his return, MI has not been the same. The franchise made the difficult decision to dethrone their former captain Rohit Sharma, a move that was met with backlash from fans. They booed every time Pandya appeared on the field.
Rumours of tension between Pandya and Rohit persisted. Then came the 2024 T20 World Cup, where Pandya played a pivotal role in India’s victory. Rohit Sharma was seen affectionately kissing Pandya’s cheek as he expressed how tough his journey had been before the win.
Despite this moment of unity, MI’s performance since Pandya’s return has been inconsistent. The 2025 season was the only time they reached the playoffs, only to be eliminated by Shreyas Iyer’s strong innings for the Punjab Kings.
