A Moment to Remember
After achieving the most significant victory of his career, the first question Joao Fonseca was asked was about how he maintained his belief in himself. His response was candid: he didn’t.
This win marked Fonseca’s first time playing on Court Philippe-Chatrier, his first third-round victory in a Grand Slam, and his first match against Novak Djokovic. The journey to this point had been challenging. Just two days prior, he had fought through a grueling five-set match against Dino Prizmic, coming back from a two-set deficit. This impressive win undoubtedly boosted his confidence, but facing Djokovic was an entirely different challenge.
Facing the Giant
The initial two sets of the match seemed to reflect the disparity between a 24-time Grand Slam champion and a 19-year-old who had never reached the second week of a major tournament. Although Fonseca managed to come back from a 5-1 deficit in the first set, he couldn’t complete the comeback as Djokovic took it 6-4. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Djokovic maintaining control and winning 6-4 again.
At that point, the highly anticipated match appeared to be heading towards a routine win for Djokovic. He hadn’t lost a best-of-five match from two sets to love in 16 years and was clearly outplaying Fonseca.
Turning the Tide
Despite Djokovic’s strong performance, Fonseca found a way to raise his game. At the start of the third set, he took an early break and defended against two break points to hold serve. His attempts to introduce variety into his play, which had not worked well in the first two sets, began to pay off. His slices and drop shots became more effective as the match progressed.
Fonseca held on for the rest of the set and closed it out with strong serving, winning 6-3. The fourth set proved to be a crucial turning point for both players. Fonseca needed to stay in the match, while Djokovic had to finish it—especially considering his tournament goals with an open draw. Both players delivered strong performances under pressure, resulting in a set that lasted nearly 90 minutes.
A Test of Will
Fonseca broke early again, but this time Djokovic managed to break back. Throughout the set, both players had chances to gain an advantage, and it was Fonseca who ultimately came through when it mattered most. He hit powerful forehands at the right moments to take a late break and serve out the set.
Once again, Fonseca found himself in a fifth set after being on the brink of a straight-set loss. With nothing to lose, he played with freedom and fearlessness.
The Final Set
When Djokovic took an early break in the fifth set, Fonseca didn’t falter. He immediately responded with a break-back. Everything that had worked for Fonseca up until that point was still in full effect, but what truly stood out was his patience during rallies. In the fifth set, Fonseca was ending points at the perfect times.
Just like in the fourth set, Fonseca had break points at 5-5. Djokovic saved the first two, but on the third, Fonseca hit a drop shot that barely cleared the net, making it impossible for Djokovic to reach. This gave Fonseca a chance to serve for the match.
A Historic Win
This victory would be the biggest of Fonseca’s career, his best Grand Slam run, and his second comeback from two sets to love—his first occurring just days before. All the pressure was on Fonseca as he served for the match, and he handled it with remarkable composure.
Djokovic, of course, made things difficult for Fonseca, holding a break point at 30-40. But Fonseca remained calm. He served an ace out wide to bring the game to deuce, and then served two aces down the T to clinch the match.
A New Chapter
Joao Fonseca has had impressive moments throughout his young career. None have been as spectacular as this. Navigating uncharted territory on the biggest stage in the sport against one of the greatest, Fonseca proved himself with a combination of skill, adaptability, and perseverance.
