Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag continued to struggle with his form in another underwhelming performance against the Gujarat Titans (GT) during Qualifier 2 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday, May 29. The 2008 champions opted to bat first in New Chandigarh, with Parag opening at number five in the batting order.
The right-handed batter started strongly, hitting a four and a six off the first two deliveries he faced from Rashid Khan. However, this promising start was short-lived, as Parag was dismissed by Jason Holder in the next over for just 11 runs. This early exit further extended his streak of three consecutive innings without scoring a half-century.
Parag’s performance this season has been inconsistent, with a total of 309 runs in 14 matches at an average of 23.76 and a strike rate of 157.65. His current average is the lowest of his IPL career since the 2023 season, when he averaged 13 after playing only seven games. Between April 10 and 28, Parag played six matches but managed just 75 runs at an average of 12.50.
Despite this rocky patch, Parag made a strong comeback in the following two matches, scoring 90 and 51 against the Delhi Capitals. The 90-run innings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium remains his highest score of the 2026 season.
Although his batting has had its ups and downs, Parag has led the Rajasthan Royals to success this season. Taking over from Sanju Samson as the franchise’s captain, he guided RR to the playoffs in his first year in charge. The Jaipur-based team finished fourth in the points table after 14 matches and secured their place in the knockouts with a final-day victory over the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
Parag scored just 14 runs in that crucial match, but his leadership has been instrumental in the team’s progress. He now has the opportunity to become only the third captain in Rajasthan Royals’ history to lead the team to an IPL final.
