“Good Guys Win”: Palace Boss Targets Forest and UEFA After Cup Victory

Crystal Palace’s Triumph and the Controversy Surrounding Their European Journey

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has made it clear that his club is not only proud of their recent success in the Conference League but also frustrated with the circumstances that led to their participation. The victory came on Wednesday night, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal as Oliver Glasner concluded his tenure with a third trophy in the past year. The win over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig marked a significant milestone for the Eagles, who have now secured a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Parish’s comments following the match highlighted both the joy of the achievement and the lingering frustrations about how they arrived at this point. “To be in Europe, travelling round Europe (is one thing) but to come and win it is incredible and it hasn’t really sunk in,” he said on TNT Sports. “It’s an incredible achievement. The players, the staff, all of the ups and downs we’ve had this season, it’s brilliant to get here and to get in to the Europa League where we deserve to be.”

A Long Road to Europe

Palace’s journey to the Conference League was anything but straightforward. At the start of the season, Parish led a delegation of seven to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the club was excluded from the Europa League. The decision came after UEFA ruled that Palace had breached its rules on multi-club ownership. Specifically, the governing body found that US businessman John Textor, who held a 43% stake in the club, had influence at Selhurst Park.

Textor’s group also owned French side Lyon, which qualified for the same competition and took priority because they finished higher in their domestic league than FA Cup winners Palace. Although Textor later sold his stake, the decision stood, and Palace were replaced in the Europa League by Nottingham Forest.

Forest, who pushed for Palace to be expelled, eventually faced their own challenges in the Europa League. They were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Aston Villa.

The Legal Battle and Ongoing Disputes

The controversy surrounding Palace’s exclusion from the Europa League led to a legal battle. Forest enlisted a legal team to represent them during Palace’s appeal, which took place in Switzerland in August. One of the key arguments presented by Palace was that Forest had been given extra time beyond UEFA’s March 1 deadline to address their own multi-club ownership issues.

At one point, when both Forest and Greek side Olympiakos – owned by Evangelos Marinakis – had the potential to qualify for the Champions League, Marinakis placed Forest into a blind trust to navigate the rules. However, documents revealed that the move was made on April 29, well after the deadline.

As reported by Daily Mail Sport, Palace demanded full disclosure of what they believed were bombshell documents and texts between UEFA and Forest, claiming these could prove double standards were at play. Despite this, Forest maintained that they met deadlines in good faith, and officials believed there would be no issue in sharing the documents.

A New Era for Crystal Palace

Despite the setbacks, Palace are now celebrating their first major European trophy. They will compete in the Europa League next season, bringing the total number of English clubs in Europe to nine. This marks a significant step forward for the club, which has long struggled to establish itself in European competitions.

Parish emphasized that the victory is just the beginning. “We have got a taste for it now, we want to keep it going. We have gone up a level and we have got to try and stay there. We will have a week to celebrate and then work hard in the summer.”

Meanwhile, Forest will be without European football after finishing 16th in the Premier League. The club’s journey through the Europa League ended in disappointment, leaving fans wondering what might have been if the circumstances had been different.
