‘Plot hole confession’: Horror film director admits mystery flaw

The Rise of ‘Obsession’ and Its Controversial Plot Hole

The horror film Obsession has taken the entertainment world by storm, becoming a topic of conversation for audiences and critics alike. Directed by Curry Barker, the movie follows Bear (played by Michael Johnston), who breaks the mysterious ‘One Wish Willow’ in an attempt to win the heart of his crush, childhood friend Nikk (Inde Navarrette). While he achieves his goal, the film quickly delves into darker territory, revealing that some desires come with a sinister price.

Since its release on May 15, Obsession has been a box office success, earning over $80 million worldwide. Its popularity has sparked discussions about the film’s plot, particularly a notable inconsistency that even the director has acknowledged.

A Director’s Admission: The Plot Hole That Stands Out

In an interview with Total Film, Barker addressed a specific scene involving the One Wish Willow seller, who mentions how others have experienced unwanted consequences from their wishes. When asked what kind of wishes other people might have made, Barker admitted that there is a significant plot hole in the film.

“It’s kind of a plot hole,” Barker said. “Like, it’s something I don’t like to think about too much. Because it totally doesn’t make sense if there’s a world of people just making wishes, it really doesn’t make any sense at all.”

He elaborated further, explaining that if the One Wish Willow actually worked, as suggested by the film’s lore, then people would be making wishes constantly. This could lead to chaotic outcomes, such as dragons existing in the real world. However, the film portrays a relatively normal world, which creates a contradiction.

Barker shared his own theory on the matter: “Here’s my take: every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true. So, you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time. But then, that doesn’t make sense, because [of a scene where] the money falls from the ceiling. Yeah, it’s broken!”

Future Plans: Anthology or Sequel?

With Obsession proving to be a hit, fans are eager to know if a sequel is in the works. However, Barker has a different vision for the future of the franchise.

“What really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology,” he said. “Like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP [Director of Photography] and then you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin on it, and that would be really cool.”

This approach would allow for a variety of stories, each exploring the consequences of different wishes. It also offers a fresh perspective on the One Wish Willow concept, potentially addressing the plot hole that Barker himself admits exists.

Conclusion

Obsession has captured the imagination of audiences with its unique premise and compelling storytelling. While the film has its flaws, including the acknowledged plot hole, it remains a standout entry in the horror genre. With the possibility of an anthology series on the horizon, the world of the One Wish Willow may continue to expand in exciting ways.

For those who haven’t seen it yet, Obsession is now playing in cinemas. Whether you’re a fan of horror or simply looking for a thought-provoking film, this movie is worth watching.
