Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, a prominent figure in the art world known for her sharp wit and insightful commentary, has passed away at the age of 40. Helphenstein was found unresponsive in her room at the Rosewood São Paulo hotel, located in the Bela Vista district of Brazil’s largest city. The discovery was made on Sunday, according to local media reports.
Globo, one of the first outlets to report the news, stated that Helphenstein had been in São Paulo for approximately three weeks while undergoing a cosmetic procedure. According to a police report cited by Veja São Paulo, a plastic surgeon who had been unable to reach her went to the hotel to check on her well-being. Hotel staff attempted to contact her via phone but received no response. When they entered the room, they found her unconscious in bed.
Authorities have yet to release a cause of death, and the investigation is still ongoing. A spokesperson for the Rosewood São Paulo confirmed Helphenstein’s death in a statement to arts publication Hyperallergic. “Since the incident, the hotel has provided full collaboration with the competent authorities, promptly providing all the information requested to assist in the investigation,” the spokesperson said. The hotel added that it would not comment further out of “respect for the privacy of the guest, their family members, and the work of the responsible authorities.”
A spokesperson for the city of São Paulo told Hyperallergic that police were investigating the death of a 40-year-old woman but did not identify Helphenstein by name or provide further details.
The Rise of Jerry Gogosian
Helphenstein gained widespread recognition under the pseudonym Jerry Gogosian. She launched the anonymous Instagram account in 2018 while recovering from an illness, according to Artnet News. The account quickly became a hub for contemporary art circles, known for its satirical memes, industry commentary, and insider gossip. Over time, she built a following of nearly 150,000 people across her platforms.
Her identity remained a mystery for two years before Artnet News columnist Kenny Schachter publicly revealed that she was behind the account in 2020. In an interview with W magazine, Helphenstein expressed her desire to become “the female Anthony Bourdain of the art world.” This ambition led her to expand her work beyond online satire and commentary.
Expanding Horizons in the Art World
In 2022, Helphenstein curated the online exhibition Suggested Followers: How the Algorithm is Always Right, which featured emerging artists and was presented by Sotheby’s. She also hosted the contemporary art podcast Art Smack, initially on Spotify and later on Patreon. Additionally, she wrote a Substack newsletter covering topics such as art-world politics, personal relationships, and her experiences with depression.
According to her personal website, Helphenstein was pursuing an MBA at New York University. However, the details of the ongoing investigation into her death remain limited, and no further information has been released by the authorities.
