Amazon cancels Stargate TV series seven months after 2025 announcement

The End of an Era for the Stargate Reboot

The cosmic gate has closed on Amazon’s ambitious reboot of the iconic sci-fi franchise Stargate, just as the ancient dialing device that changed everything for Colonel Jack O’Neill in 1997’s groundbreaking film seemed ready to open doors for a new generation. The original Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, introduced audiences to unforgettable moments that defined a genre.

For fans who have spent decades watching through the wormhole, the news that the portal won’t be dialing forward comes as a devastating shock. Despite the excitement surrounding the project, Amazon has officially canceled the new Stargate TV series just seven months after giving it a series order in November 2025. The sci-fi revival, which was developing under showrunner Martin Gero, will not move forward despite the involvement of original film creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin as executive producers.

Concerns Over Audience Appeal

Insiders indicate that Amazon executives became concerned about the project’s ability to attract a broader audience beyond longtime fans. These concerns reportedly centered on whether the series could achieve mainstream appeal in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape. Notably, no official plot details were ever released, leaving fans with little insight into the direction of the reboot.

The project featured a strong creative lineup, including Martin Gero, who previously worked on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, along with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were also attached as consulting producers, adding further legacy credibility. Despite the cancellation, Amazon is still exploring ways to expand the Stargate universe, which has already spanned multiple series, films, and spin-offs since the 1994 original.

A New Direction for Amazon Prime Video

While one iconic franchise stalls, Amazon is already shifting focus to a very different kind of storytelling for its next big release. A new series to fill the void left by Stargate‘s cancellation.

Even though Amazon has shelved the Stargate reboot, Prime Video is doubling down on young adult romance with Every Year After, set to arrive in summer 2026. The series adapts Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel Every Summer After, which sold over a million copies and gained massive popularity through TikTok.

A Story of Love and Loss

Set in Barry’s Bay, rural Ontario, the story follows Persephone Fraser and Sam Florek over six summers and one life-changing week. Their childhood friendship evolves into a deep romance before falling apart, only to be revisited years later under emotional circumstances. When Percy returns for a funeral, unresolved feelings force both characters to confront their past.

Matt Cornett stars as Sam Florek, while Sadie Soverall plays Percy, supported by a strong ensemble cast including Aurora Perrineau, Abigail Cowen, and Michael Bradway. Amy B. Harris serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Carley Fortune. With its emotional premise and built-in fanbase, the series aims to capture a different audience while expanding Prime Video’s content slate.

Looking Ahead

As the Stargate reboot fades into history, Amazon continues to explore new avenues for content creation. While the cancellation may disappoint fans, it also opens the door for fresh stories and new opportunities. Whether it’s through romance dramas or other genres, the streaming giant remains committed to delivering compelling content to its viewers.
