Liverpool’s New Head Coach: Andoni Iraola
Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Andoni Iraola to become their new head coach. The Spaniard is expected to sign an initial two-year deal to replace Arne Slot, who left the Reds just 12 months after leading them to their 20th top-flight title.
Iraola, aged 43, spent three years at Bournemouth, where he guided the club to their first-ever Europa League qualification last season. His team finished just three points behind Liverpool in that campaign. This will be Iraola’s first experience managing a team in the Champions League, as his previous roles were with AEK Larnaca, Mirandes, and Rayo Vallecano.
However, Iraola has prior experience in the competition as a player, having captained Athletic Bilbao under Marcelo Bielsa. He also played for Spain during their golden era and later joined New York City FC, which is part of Manchester City’s multi-club network, where he was teammates with Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo, and David Villa.
Playing Style and Management Approach
Iraola is known for his heavy pressing and fast transitions, which align well with the ‘heavy metal’ style introduced by former manager Jurgen Klopp. This approach was also something that Mohamed Salah, who recently left the club, appreciated.
There are, however, questions about whether Iraola’s intense brand of football and management can translate to a top club like Liverpool, which could play over 60 games next season. His former player Antoine Semenyo claimed on a podcast that during his time at Bournemouth, Iraola often made players train seven days a week.
Strong athleticism is key to Iraola’s philosophy. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, he stated:
“It is key because we try to play with a fast rhythm. We don’t want the games to stop and you don’t have time to recover. I always say: ‘You have to ask for the ball when you’re tired.’ If you are waiting to rest before asking again for the ball or making the run into space, everyone can do this. But you are a Premier League player and if you are tired, this is the moment you have to push the opposition, when they are also tired, and try to break them. To do that you have to be at your best physically.”
Inspiration from Other Sports
Iraola draws inspiration from other sports such as cycling, American football, and basketball. His doggedness may fit the spirit of Liverpool. During the last season, Bournemouth earned 17 points from losing positions, the third-best tally in the Premier League. While Liverpool would not aim to go behind, this record suggests that Iraola could lead his team to a comeback on a feverish Anfield night if required.
Iraola’s Bournemouth side, while not particularly high-possession, was classy on the ball and visually appealing. He has also successfully managed to improve the players working under him.
Player Development and Transfers
Several players who played under Iraola have secured big moves. These include Antoine Semenyo (Manchester City), Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid), Ilya Zabarnyi (Paris Saint-Germain), and Dominic Solanke (Tottenham). It is expected that Eli Junior Kroupi will be the next to follow. Liverpool will hope that Iraola can have a similar influence on the development of 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, although the intention is to keep hold of him long-term.
Basque Influence in Football
Iraola’s appointment marks another Basque manager taking a top job. The region, with a population of around 3.15 million, has produced notable figures such as Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery, and Xabi Alonso. Now, Iraola joins this list, further cementing the Basque region’s impact on modern football.
