Officials sound alarm over deadly ‘Benadryl challenge’ after 5 kids hospitalized

The Dangers of the Benadryl Challenge

Health professionals are increasingly concerned about a dangerous trend known as the Benadryl challenge, which has led to hospitalizations and even deaths among young people. This challenge involves taking large amounts of Benadryl, an over-the-counter allergy medication, in an attempt to experience hallucinations. The practice has been spreading on social media for years and continues to pose serious risks to children and teenagers.

In late May, at least five children were admitted to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego after attempting the Benadryl challenge. According to local reports, the affected individuals ranged from 16 to 22 years old. Dr. Shahfar Khan, a pediatrician at the hospital, explained the severe health impacts that can result from this behavior.

“When you take it in large quantities, it can affect various systems of the body,” said Dr. Khan. “It can cause agitation, hallucinations, a very fast heart rate that could lead to cardiac arrest. Seizures are also common with Benadryl ingestion.”

Despite the severity of the symptoms, none of the five children required ongoing hospital care. However, the incident highlights the growing concern among medical professionals about the increasing number of cases linked to the challenge.

A Tragic Death in Ohio

The dangers of the Benadryl challenge were tragically illustrated by the death of a 13-year-old boy from Columbus, Ohio, in 2023. Jacob Stevens, who attempted the challenge, suffered an overdose and died after being on a ventilator for six days. His father, Justin Stevens, described the experience as “the worst day of his life.”

“Too much for his body,” Justin said when speaking to local media. “I want everyone to know about my son’s situation.”

Jacob’s family urged parents to be vigilant and to have open conversations with their children about the risks associated with the challenge. Their message was clear: “Keep an eye on what your kid’s doing with that phone. Talk to them about the situation.”

FDA Warnings and Manufacturer Response

The Benadryl challenge has been around since at least 2020, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about its dangers. The agency highlighted that teens were participating in the challenge on platforms like TikTok, which could lead to serious health problems or even death.

The FDA advised parents to lock up Benadryl, which contains diphenhydramine, to prevent misuse. In response to the growing concern, Kenvue, the company that produces Benadryl, has taken steps to address the issue.

“We’ve taken action to stop this behavior from spreading and work with social media platforms and their safety teams to remove these dangerous posts, including any new content we identify in our monitoring,” a company spokesperson said.

Kenvue emphasized its commitment to ensuring the proper use of its products. The company works with non-profit organizations and healthcare professionals to educate the public on safe storage and appropriate use of over-the-counter medications.

Ongoing Concerns and Public Awareness

Despite these efforts, the Benadryl challenge remains a significant public health issue. Health officials continue to warn parents and caregivers about the risks associated with this dangerous trend. They encourage open communication with children and vigilance regarding their online activities.

As the challenge persists, the need for awareness and education is more important than ever. Parents are urged to stay informed and to take proactive steps to protect their children from harmful behaviors that may arise from social media trends.
