Western Sydney’s Pursuit of Nicolas Milanovic
Western Sydney is making a strong push to bring back Nicolas Milanovic to the Wanderers, but the club faces stiff competition from at least two other teams vying for the services of the former A-League star.
Milanovic, 24, has returned to Australia after a challenging season with Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. The attacking midfielder joined the Dons on a three-year deal following a standout 2024-25 A-League season with the Wanderers, where he won the Johnny Warren Medal. At that time, Milanovic had high hopes of being selected in the Socceroos’ squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
However, his time at Aberdeen has not met expectations. He has failed to score in 23 appearances, including 13 as a substitute, across all competitions. Aberdeen is now looking to move on from Milanovic, whose World Cup aspirations were quickly dashed after he made just two appearances off the bench for the Socceroos in friendly matches against New Zealand nine months ago.

Despite his struggles in Scotland, Milanovic is eager to return to the A-League and reignite his career. His previous connection with the Wanderers, who finished the recent season as wooden spoon winners, has positioned them as strong contenders to sign him. The club is currently rebuilding under new coach Ufuk Talay, and they are seen as the favorites to secure Milanovic’s signature.
However, the race for Milanovic’s services is far from over. He is also being pursued by some of the league’s top clubs, adding an element of uncertainty to the situation. The Wanderers have not commented on their interest in Milanovic, leaving fans and analysts speculating about their next move.
Other Moves and Developments
While the focus has been on Milanovic, there have been several other notable developments in the A-League. Melbourne Victory has entered the race to sign former Sydney FC star Joe Lolley. The 33-year-old English winger’s departure from the Sky Blues was confirmed on Monday, and he had previously been linked with moves to Macarthur FC and Perth Glory.
“Ideally, I’d like to stay in Australia and play football,” Lolley said. “I still feel like I can really contribute and, barring a few injuries, I feel like I’m ready to prove myself again and I’m up for whatever challenge comes my way.”
Victory is also waiting for Spanish star and reigning Johnny Warren medallist Juan Mata to decide whether he will sign a new deal after starring for the club during the 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, Perth Glory have re-signed Welsh international Tom Lawrence for two more years. “I believe in the project at this club, and how forward this club’s going,” Lawrence said.
Team Changes and Departures
Sydney FC announced the departures of several players on Wednesday. The off-contract quartet of Joel King, Patrick Wood, Ahmet Arslan, and Corey Hollman left the club, along with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Piero Quispe, whose respective loan spells from Scottish club Motherwell and Mexican outfit Pumas UNAM have come to an end.
