A Journey Through Time
Kylie Minogue recently found herself taking a nostalgic trip while working on a Netflix documentary about her life. This journey not only brought back memories but also rekindled her connection with her ex-boyfriend, Jason Donovan.
The pair first appeared as onscreen lovers Charlene and Scott Robinson in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. Their real-life relationship lasted three years before they parted ways in 1989. During the production of the new special, Kylie and Jason shared videos and photos from their past, which helped them reconnect.
When asked if she and Jason, now 58, were still good friends, the 58-year-old singer replied, “Yeah, yeah, we are.” She added that she had sent him some “doozies” while going through old photos and video footage of them together. “I told him he better start collecting things for his doco,” she said.
Kylie also shared how their romance began after their characters fell in love on the show. “We fancied each other. The love story in the show came first and then it became a real thing,” she explained.
Watching the documentary, titled Kylie, with her family was an emotional experience for the pop star. “It was so emotional watching it with them,” she said. “When the clip of Scott and Charlene kissing came up, my nephew turned round to me and said, ‘Oh, that was quite the kiss!’”
Jason was present at the premiere of the Netflix documentary in London last month. The iconic songstress was delighted to be reunited with the now London-based actor as they spent time together on the red carpet.
The documentary includes never-before-seen home video footage of Kylie and Jason in their youth.
In the footage, Jason admits he felt jealous of Kylie’s success. Their relationship became strained after Kylie launched a successful singing career, which faced criticism. Jason reflected on this period, saying, “She really struggled and I was like, ‘well, maybe you shouldn’t have gone down that route…’ because that’s how my attitude was.”
He continued, “Her music career at that point had really taken off. It didn’t piss me off but it was like… We’d been this partnership in the show and suddenly I could see she was moving away from her acting. So there were a few arguments. I had my own ego at that point ‘why isn’t this happening to me?’ you know what I mean.”
Home video footage of the pair in the early days of their romance showed young Kylie rolling around in bed giggling, while Jason filmed her. Kylie had forgotten about the clips’ existence until Netflix producers tracked them down. “When I saw that footage for the first time, my heart swelled. I thought, ‘Oh my God, we were just babies,’” she said.
“That brought back tidal waves of nostalgia, emotion and a lot of love.”
