New Signings Bolster PNG Chiefs’ Roster
The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Chiefs are steadily building their squad as they prepare for their inaugural season in the National Rugby League (NRL). The team has made several high-profile signings, including former NSW State of Origin utility player Connor Watson and English Test prop Matty Lees. These additions mark a significant step forward for the new club as it looks to establish itself in the competitive NRL landscape.
Connor Watson Joins the Chiefs
Connor Watson, known for his versatility on the field, has signed a two-year deal with the PNG Chiefs. Watson, who has played in various positions such as lock, hooker, and in the halves, confirmed that he will leave the Sydney Roosters at the end of the current season. He will join St George Illawarra for the 2027 season before making the move to the Chiefs for their first campaign in 2028.
“Connor is the type of player every club wants. He is selfless, tough, professional and incredibly respected across the game,” said PNG Chiefs general manager Michael Chammas. “His versatility and experience will be invaluable for us as we continue building our squad towards 2028.”
Watson’s decision to join the Chiefs comes after he traveled to Port Moresby to meet with team officials. His signing marks the third major addition to the Chiefs’ roster, earning him the title of “Signing 003.”
Chammas also expressed gratitude to the Sydney Roosters for their support throughout the process. “We also want to thank the Sydney Roosters for their professionalism, patience and understanding throughout this process.”

Matty Lees Brings International Experience
Matty Lees, an English Test prop, is set to join the Chiefs after his English club St Helens confirmed his pending move. Lees, who has never played in the NRL, is a four-time Super League winner with St Helens and has earned 12 Test caps for England. He played a key role in Saints’ 2023 World Club Challenge victory over Penrith.
Lees will remain in the UK for the 2027 season before relocating to Port Moresby for the 2028 campaign. “Sometimes in life, when an opportunity comes, you have to take it on,” Lees said in a statement. “Playing in the NRL has been a dream of mine for a very long time, and the opportunity that has been presented to my family and me is one that I could not turn away from.”

Building the Squad Through Strategic Moves
The signing of Lees follows a series of efforts by the Chiefs to attract talent from the Super League and Championship. Powerbrokers from the Chiefs visited England to meet with PNG players competing in those leagues. They also met with head coach Willie Peters, whose Hull KR side was defeated by Wigan in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
These strategic moves highlight the Chiefs’ commitment to assembling a strong and diverse squad. With each new signing, the team is moving closer to its goal of making a meaningful impact in the NRL. As the 2028 season approaches, the focus remains on creating a cohesive unit that can compete at the highest level.
The journey of the PNG Chiefs is just beginning, but with the right mix of experienced players and emerging talent, the future looks promising for the new franchise.
