Chris Pratt Reveals Why He Avoids ‘Mamma Mia’ Accent

Chris Pratt Returns as Mario in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Chris Pratt is set to reprise his role as Mario in the animated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This follows the massive success of the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide. The second installment in the franchise will hit theaters on April 1, 2026, and promises to bring new adventures to the Mushroom Kingdom.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, while promoting the upcoming film, Pratt discussed some of the challenges he faced in portraying Mario. One notable change is the decision to tone down the character’s Italian accent. In the movie, Mario is depicted as being from Brooklyn, which means his accent is less exaggerated compared to the original video game version.

“I’m like, ‘Why does it make sense for a guy who’s from Brooklyn who doesn’t have that accent to use that so much?’ So it was always tough,” Pratt said. He explained that the character’s iconic phrase, “Mamma Mia,” posed a particular challenge. “They’re like, ‘It’s written as ‘Mamma Mia.’’ But I’m like, if I’m expressing some reverence or some sense of, ‘Oh wow, Mamma Mia.’ But that’s not something necessarily a person says unless they’re doing the Italian accent.”

To navigate this issue, Pratt experimented with a slowed-down version of the catchphrase, aiming for a Brooklyn intonation rather than a traditional Italian one. “So it’s always really hard to find how ‘Mamma Mia’ works… I’ve always tried to vary. I think that’s maybe why they slowed it down to take some of the stink off it because I’m not sure I ever fully got it right, but it’s like, ‘Maaammaaa Miaaaa,’”
