The Boys Season 4: A Controversial Episode That Almost Didn’t Happen
Even ‘The Boys,’ a show known for its bold and extreme storytelling, faced significant challenges with its season 4. While controversy is part of the show’s identity, one particular episode came dangerously close to being canceled due to its sensitive content.

The episode in question, initially titled Assassination Run, sparked a lot of concern among the production team. The plot involved Homelander planning to assassinate an incumbent president, a storyline that became increasingly relevant after real-world events involving Donald Trump in 2024. This timing made the episode particularly risky, as it touched on real political tensions.
Showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that the episode caused a great deal of anxiety, especially since he was the one who directed it. “I had a lot of emotional eggs in that basket, and there was a very real possibility that they were going to delay its airing,” Kripke told Polygon. The situation escalated to the point where even Amazon executives were involved in the decision-making process.
At one point, it seemed like the episode might be postponed or even canceled. However, the solution was surprisingly simple: rename the episode. “All that came back was, ‘Just change the title. It’s a tasteless title, considering, but it’s different enough, and we will back it,’” Kripke recalled.
This incident highlights the fine line between satire and sensitivity. ‘The Boys’ has always been a reflection of real-world power structures, often exaggerated and sometimes brutal. However, the real world can catch up with the show faster than expected, making certain storylines more delicate than anticipated.
A Show That Reflects Chaos, For Better Or Worse

One of the reasons why ‘The Boys’ has become such a successful series is its ability to tackle uncomfortable truths through dark humor and intense storytelling. It is not just entertainment; it responds to the world around us. As Kripke mentioned, this creative outlet is something he will miss greatly as the series approaches its final season.
The show provides a platform for releasing frustration, transforming the chaotic headlines into something the audience can relate to. Without it, even the creators feel the same helplessness as the rest of the viewers watching the news unfold.
With season 5 on the horizon, the finale must live up to the show’s legacy. Spinoffs like Gen V and Vought Rising continue to expand the universe, ensuring the franchise remains relevant for years to come. However, the original series’ finale still marks the end of something special.
Perhaps what makes this story even more impactful is that, despite all the chaos, violence, and shock value, ‘The Boys’ has always been about reflecting the world back at us—distorted enough to make us see it clearly. Sometimes, that clarity can be unsettling.
