Sanju Samson’s Journey: A Tale of Triumph and Setbacks
Sanju Samson, the Kerala-based wicketkeeper-batter, has had a rollercoaster ride in his cricketing career. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, he has struggled to maintain consistent performance, which has affected his professional standing. This trend seems to continue as he recently earned the Player of the Tournament award during the knockout stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. However, this success has not translated into strong performances in the Indian Premier League 2026.
Samson joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a record Rs 18 crore, marking a significant move after spending several seasons with the Rajasthan Royals. His arrival was met with high expectations, given his strong white-ball form and experience as both a batter and captain. Unfortunately, he has not met these expectations in his three appearances with the five-time champions.
Life Milestones and Challenges
Throughout his life, Sanju Samson has faced numerous milestones and challenges. At the end of the previous year, he was the only Indian player to achieve three T20I centuries. However, Shubman Gill took over his starting role before the Asia Cup 2025. Jitesh Sharma was selected as the primary wicketkeeper, forcing Samson to adapt to a new batting role that he had never practiced before. The World Cup selectors included him in the squad after witnessing his inconsistent performance against the New Zealand national cricket team.
After missing the first match against the USA, Samson did not believe he would be crucial to the team. He managed to score a total of 46 runs across two matches against Namibia and Zimbabwe, scoring 22 and 24 runs respectively. However, his best performance came during the critical moments of the event. He won the Player of the Series award, with match-winning performances including scores of 97*, 89, and 89 against the West Indies, England, and New Zealand. He accumulated 321 runs in five batting innings, maintaining an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37.
Expectations vs. Reality
Many believed that Samson would carry his World Cup form into the IPL season, but this has not been the case. In his first match for CSK, he scored just 6 runs from 7 balls against his former team, Rajasthan Royals. He followed this with 7 runs from 7 balls against Punjab Kings XI and 9 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In all three matches, he lost his wicket during the powerplay. His current average for CSK in IPL 2026 stands at 22 from three matches, which does not reflect his true batting skills, especially after his impressive World Cup performance.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setbacks, there is still hope that Sanju Samson can turn his IPL 2026 campaign around. His ability to perform under pressure and deliver match-winning performances suggests that he has the potential to bounce back. With the right support and adjustments, he could regain his form and prove that his World Cup success was not a fluke.
As fans and analysts watch closely, the focus will be on whether Samson can find his rhythm and make a lasting impact in the IPL. His journey so far has been a mix of highs and lows, but there is no doubt that he remains a key player to watch in the world of cricket.
