Sam Kerr admits: “I’m the pushover parent. Jagger’s got me under his thumb”

Sam Kerr Shares Insights on Parenting with Kristie Mewis

After an incredible return home for the AFC Asian Women’s Cup, Matildas superstar Sam Kerr is back to her usual routine, juggling elite football with motherhood. Sam and partner Kristie Mewis welcomed their first child, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, in May 2025, and life has been a whirlwind ever since.

Bounty Parents caught up with Sam Kerr to chat about life at home, the little moments that make parenthood magical, and how she’s balancing it all while continuing to shine on the football field.

A Special Homecoming

Big congrats on the AFC Asian Women’s Cup! What was it like being back home in Australia playing with the Matildas?

“I always love playing at home, it feels so special to not only play in front of family and friends but also the home fans that support us across the world.”

Now that the tournament’s wrapped, what does life look like for you at the moment?

“Life is just business as usual — training and games with Chelsea. Trying to get back on a normal routine after a month of travelling with the Matildas.”

Bonds WonderGrow Campaign

I loved the Bonds WonderGrow campaign with you and Jagger. What made you want to jump on board?

“It just felt really natural. Bonds has always been an iconic brand in Australia and Jagger is always wearing Bonds, so it felt like a fun fit and a cute way to share Jagger with Australia.”

The Wild Ride of Parenthood

Becoming a parent is a wild ride. What’s surprised you the most about it so far?

“There’s been a lot, but I’ve loved it. I think how quickly they grow and learn — people warn you it goes quick, but it really does. It’s so fun seeing the change every week.”

You’re juggling elite sport and motherhood. How have you found that balance day to day?

“I am really lucky Kristie has been amazing support this whole year, so I’ve found it quite easy to balance. It’s made me spend more time at home, which I think has been positive for my career. We’ve had difficult days but I think it’s all worth it.”

Treasured Moments with Jagger

What are the little moments with Jagger that you’re soaking up the most right now?

“Jags has just started walking, so we are loving the fun moments we get with him while he navigates his way around. His favourite toys at the moment are balls too, so that’s been fun playing with him.”

Between you and Kristie, who’s the stricter parent?

“Believe it or not, I am 100% the pushover parent. Kristie holds all the rules in this household. Jagger 100% has me under his thumb — I am the fun parent.”

Parenting Hacks and Advice

Have you picked up any parenting hacks or routines that you swear by already?

“We don’t live normal, routined lives so it’s been difficult to have strict routines, but we swear by some sort of bedtime routine: bath, bottle, books, bed .”

What’s one piece of advice you’ve been given that’s actually stuck?

“I think the best bit of advice is that everything is just a phase. When you’re going through a tough moment — like teething or him hating getting changed — just reminding yourself that it really is just a phase gives you a little bit of relief.”

Role Model for Jagger

What kind of role model do you hope to be for Jagger as he grows up?

“I hope to just be a fun, loving, caring role model. I don’t know what Jagger will do in life, but I hope that he always knows he comes from a loving and caring family that will support him in whatever he chooses.”

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about in this next chapter, both as a family and in your career?

“There’s lots to look forward to — just watching Jagger grow, making friends, starting sport… so much to look forward to. In my career, hopefully just more of the same: enjoying my football, scoring goals, and hopefully winning!”
