Artist Seeks Trans and Nonbinary Subjects for Hastings Museum Exhibition

Exploring Gender Identity Through Art

A London-based artist, Ruth, began exploring their own gender identity during the Covid lockdowns. This period of isolation led them to discover the trans community online, particularly through platforms like TikTok. Inspired by this journey, Ruth decided to create a series of Pin Ups, drawing from the style of pull-out Jackie magazine popstar pictures from the 1970s. These artworks feature vibrant borders and torn edges, capturing the essence of a bygone era while addressing contemporary themes.

The series includes portraits of trans icons from around the world, such as April Ashley, an international model who was among the first eight people globally to undergo pioneering gender-affirming surgery in 1960. Many of the individuals depicted in these paintings have faced discrimination, a reality that Ruth is deeply aware of. As a Jungian psychoanalyst, they often support people navigating similar challenges. Ruth reflects on Carl Jung’s insights, stating: “Jung was way ahead of his time; he was already writing about people having both male and female aspects, as early as 1921.”

Nature and Transgenderism

One of the key figures in Ruth’s work is M, a transman and close friend. M works on a farm and shared with Ruth the fascinating fact that chickens can naturally transition into roosters when the flock needs protection, such as after a fox attack. This example of natural transgenderism serves as a central theme in the exhibition.

Ruth explains: “Nature is infinite in its variety and maintains resilience by constantly adapting and changing. Biological hermaphrodites exist everywhere, including wildflowers under our feet—daisies, buttercups, roses—they all have both male and female parts. In the human sphere, trans people have always existed, especially in societies that are close to nature. My paintings celebrate trans joy and the creativity of gender expansion. I believe in what I call The New Natural—being true to our authentic nature.”

Celebrating Trans Joy

Ruth’s artwork is not just a reflection of personal exploration but also a celebration of trans joy and the diversity of gender expression. By highlighting the natural occurrence of transgenderism in both the animal and human worlds, Ruth aims to challenge societal norms and promote acceptance. Their work encourages viewers to embrace the fluidity of identity and recognize the beauty in gender expansion.

The exhibition features a range of subjects, each contributing to a broader narrative about the existence and resilience of trans individuals. Ruth’s approach blends art, psychology, and natural philosophy to create a powerful commentary on identity and belonging.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities

Ruth will be at the gallery on 27th June to give a talk about their work. Details on how to book a place can be found on the Hastings Museum website. Additionally, if you are interested in modeling for Ruth, you can get in touch via the museum.
