Lord Mayor Tours River Itchen and Promotes Water Safety

A Special Tour and Water Safety Demonstration in Southampton

The Lord Mayor of Southampton, Cllr James Baillie, recently joined maritime volunteers for a special tour of the River Itchen and a public water safety demonstration. This event took place on Monday, April 6, marking the Lord Mayor’s historic role as Admiral of the Port.

The visit began at Shamrock Quay, where the Lord Mayor boarded the vessel Wizard of Bembridge. He was part of a flotilla that included volunteers and lifeboat crews. The group then travelled along the River Itchen before docking at St Denys Boat Club and heading to Riverside Park, near Cobden Bridge.

At Riverside Park, members of the public were invited to participate in a throw rope demonstration. This initiative aimed to highlight the importance of water safety and ensure that people are aware of the resources available to them in case of an emergency.

Councillor Baillie shared his thoughts on the event, stating: “Today we are undertaking a throw rope demonstration at Riverside Park. A number of throw rope stations have been installed across the waterfront here – in Southampton we are so lucky to have so many fantastic blue spaces. Water safety is so important, and I want to raise awareness that these throw ropes are here for people to use should someone find themselves in difficulty while in the water.”

He continued: “The new throw rope cabinets are vital pieces of kit. We are so lucky to have many blue spaces throughout Southampton, and with the warmer months coming, water safety is especially important. I’m also hugely grateful to The Southampton Water Safety Forum for their hard work and dedication to this project and beyond.”

New Throw Rope Cabinets and Community Efforts

The demonstration showcased newly installed throw rope cabinets, which were funded by the city council. These cabinets replaced life buoys that had been vandalised in the past. The initiative was supported by the Southampton Water Safety Forum, which includes emergency services and maritime organisations working together to improve safety along the city’s waterways.

In addition to the throw rope demonstration, the group has also been involved in promoting the development of a new Southampton Lifeboat Station under the Itchen Bridge. This station will operate as a satellite station of the Hamble Independent Lifeboat, further enhancing the city’s water safety infrastructure.

Organisers of the event stated that the purpose of the demonstration was to equip residents with simple but potentially life-saving skills ahead of the busy summer months. By raising awareness and providing practical tools, the community aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy the city’s waterways safely.

The Importance of Water Safety

Water safety is a critical aspect of life in a city like Southampton, where numerous blue spaces offer recreational opportunities. However, with the arrival of warmer weather, the risk of water-related incidents increases. The installation of throw rope cabinets and the ongoing efforts of the Southampton Water Safety Forum play a significant role in mitigating these risks.

The collaboration between local authorities, maritime volunteers, and emergency services highlights the community’s commitment to ensuring that all residents and visitors can enjoy the city’s waterways without unnecessary danger. Through initiatives like the throw rope demonstration, the message is clear: preparedness and awareness are key to preventing accidents and saving lives.

As the summer approaches, it is essential for individuals to familiarise themselves with the available safety resources. Whether it’s using a throw rope or knowing the location of life-saving equipment, every effort contributes to a safer environment for everyone.
