I Deliver Letters and Sketch Homes on My Route

As Andrew Welch makes his daily rounds in the Royal Mail uniform, he is not only delivering letters and parcels but also capturing the essence of the places he visits through his art. With 28 years of experience as a postman in North Yorkshire, Andrew has found a unique way to combine his passion for drawing with his commitment to giving back to the community.

Andrew’s artistic journey began 30 years ago, and over the years, he has developed a keen eye for the architecture and landmarks that define the areas he serves. His work often features well-known buildings such as the castle and the railway viaduct over the River Nidd in Knaresborough. However, he also draws people’s homes, creating personalized sketches that reflect the individuality of each property.

His motivation to raise funds for the Leeds Hospitals Charity stems from a personal experience. Four years ago, Andrew contracted a viral infection that led to a fractured vertebra at the top of his neck. After undergoing surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary and completing a rehabilitation program, he gradually returned to his job, starting with short bursts of work and slowly increasing his workload.

During this time, Andrew turned to his long-standing passion for drawing as a way to express gratitude for the care he received. He began sketching the buildings and homes he passed during his deliveries, using photos as references. Each piece takes approximately 15 hours to complete, and once finished, he presents the artwork to the property owners, who then make a donation to the charity.

So far, Andrew has raised more than £1,500 for the Leeds Hospitals Charity, and he credits the community for its positive response. “The community has been very good, very positive, and very complimentary,” he says. His work not only supports a worthy cause but also brings people together through shared appreciation for local architecture and art.

Andrew’s regional manager at Royal Mail, Adam Sutcliffe, praises his dedication and creativity. “Andrew’s fundraising is a brilliant example of the dedication and community spirit our posties show every day. We’re incredibly proud of the way he’s used his creativity to give something back after everything he’s been through.”

Through his unique approach, Andrew has turned his daily routine into an opportunity for both artistic expression and philanthropy. His story highlights the impact that one person can have when they combine their talents with a desire to support others. As he continues his rounds, Andrew remains a source of inspiration for those around him, proving that even the most ordinary jobs can lead to extraordinary contributions.
