Super Mario Galaxy Soars at Box Office

In theaters since April 1, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already dominating the box office. According to reports, with earnings of $372.5 million in five days, the film has had the best opening of the year at the box office. The second film in the franchise has thus surpassed Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, which grossed $140.9 million at the box office during its opening weekend. The feature film has also grossed over $400 million at the global box office after six days of release. It is projected to reach $750 million by this coming weekend.

However, it should be noted that the world’s most popular plumber benefited from two extra days of release, as the film opened on a Wednesday rather than a Friday, as is standard in the film industry.

Less successful than the original, but…

The box office debut of Super Mario Galaxy, the movie, falls short of that of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which raked in US$146 million (CA$203.1 million) in its first weekend, before reaching US$204 million (CA$283.8 million) in just five days. Internationally, the first film also performed better, with earnings totaling $375 million (CA$521.6 million) over the same period.

That said, the new film still stands out by achieving the fourth-largest global opening in history for an animated film, behind Zootopia 2, Moana 2, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Mixed reactions

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, illustrating a significant gap between professional critics and the general public. Among critics, the film has a score of around 40–44%, placing it in the “rotten” category and reflecting an overall mixed to negative reception.

Several criticisms recur frequently, notably a weak script, a lack of depth, and a sense of visual overload without real narrative coherence.

In contrast, the audience reception is significantly more positive. Viewers give it an approval rating of around 90%, demonstrating strong enthusiasm for the colorful universe, the video game references, and the film’s dynamic pace.

This contrast echoes that seen with the first Super Mario Bros. movie, which had already divided critics and fans, albeit to a lesser extent.

With the arrival of new iconic characters such as Yoshi, Rosalina, Fox, and Bowser Jr., in particular, the Mario Bros. universe is greatly enriched and expands its narrative horizons.

These additions do more than just bring something new to the table: they open the door to a multitude of storytelling possibilities, ranging from individual quests to even more ambitious collective adventures. Each character introduced has their own universe, stakes, and dynamics, allowing for the creation of parallel storylines or spin-offs centered on specific heroes.

This expansion marks a turning point for the franchise, which appears to be building a truly interconnected cinematic universe capable of reinventing itself while retaining the playful and colorful essence that made it a success.
