Brighton Secures Vital Win Against Burnley
Brighton & Hove Albion secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Burnley, keeping their hopes of qualifying for European football next season alive. Mats Wieffer’s two goals in the 43rd and 89th minutes proved decisive, as they moved the Seagulls to within two points of sixth-placed Chelsea and just one point behind Brentford in seventh.
Despite not delivering their best performance, Brighton’s visitors were too strong for Scott Parker’s team. The hosts, who have now suffered 20 league losses this season, were met with boos at the final whistle. Burnley showed some resilience in the first half, with Jaidon Anthony having an effort ruled out for offside. However, their inability to capitalize on chances was evident as they struggled to make the most of their opportunities.
Brighton’s lack of efficiency in front of goal was costly. They often overcomplicated play or hesitated when Yankuba Minteh delivered dangerous crosses into Martin Dubravka’s box. This wastefulness was punished just before halftime when Wieffer ended his 16-month goal drought by scoring past Dubravka. The keeper had already denied Minteh and was let off the hook when Danny Welbeck failed to convert a chance inside the six-yard box.
Minteh, whose efforts created the opening for the former England forward, was once again involved in the move that led to Wieffer’s goal. He sent Pascal Gross scampering down the touchline with a precise pass before the German player cut the ball back for his Dutch teammate to slot into the bottom corner.
Burnley’s frustration grew after the goal, with Lesley Ugochukwu being presented with a great chance to equalize. However, he sliced his attempt wide of a post, much to the relief of Brighton’s goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
To their credit, Burnley’s disappointment faded quickly in the second half. Bashir Humphreys thought he had scored, but he was ruled offside after sliding home from close range. Verbruggen had also parried a James Ward-Prowse free-kick directly into his path.
Zian Flemming then tested Verbruggen with a shot that the keeper blocked with his legs. Despite these moments, Brighton continued to pose a threat whenever they pushed forward. A curling effort from Jack Hinshelwood looked destined for the net, but Dubravka made a superb save to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Wieffer capitalized on a defensive error. He combined with Yasin Ayari to score a stunning goal, sealing the victory for Brighton.
