Mel McLaughlin’s Return to Work After Lung Cancer Surgery
Mel McLaughlin made a triumphant return to the Seven News sports desk on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in her journey following surgery for lung cancer. The 46-year-old presenter had undergone a procedure to remove a malignant tumour from her lung, along with a large section of the organ earlier this year. Her return to work was met with warm support from colleagues and viewers alike.
During a segment with presenters Mark Ferguson and Angela Cox, Mel expressed her gratitude and excitement at being back. “It’s been truly overwhelming, and it’s appreciated, so thanks, everyone,” she said, highlighting the emotional impact of the support she has received.
In addition to her on-air comments, Mel took to Instagram to share her feelings about this new chapter. She posted a photo of herself posing with her colleagues in the studio, captioning it with a heartfelt message. “First day back,” she wrote, followed by a note about how she remembered how to read and didn’t run out of breath—something she considered a small victory.
Mel also reflected on the support from her “wonderful, beautiful, dysfunctional work family.” She acknowledged their patience and understanding during her time of nerves and anxiety. “Poor kids having to put up with me!” she joked, adding that it was just the beginning of her recovery.
The emotional post received an outpouring of messages from fans and fellow presenters. Sally Bowery, Natalie Barr, and Abby Holmes were among those who shared their support. “Mel looked and sounded just perfect,” said the Sunrise star, while Sally added, “Great to see you back.” AFL commentator Abby Holmes commented, “You’re the best. Welcome back ❤️.”
A Family Legacy of Struggle and Strength
Mel’s battle with lung cancer is deeply personal, as it mirrors the experience of her late sister, Tara, who passed away from the same disease in 2015 at the age of 39. This connection has driven Mel to become an ambassador for the Lung Foundation Australia, where she advocates for greater awareness and research into the disease.
Neither Mel nor her sister was a smoker, leading doctors to consider a possible genetic link that may have contributed to both women developing the illness within a decade of each other. In an exclusive interview with Seven News in March, Mel revealed the details of her diagnosis and treatment. “I was diagnosed with lung cancer in December. So that’s led to surgery. I’ve had half my lung cut out,” she explained.
She described the emotional toll of the diagnosis, calling it “very traumatic” and “very triggering.” Mel also admitted to not wanting to worry anyone, especially after the recent loss of her sister, who was a mother of two.
Balancing Work and Health
Despite her health challenges, Mel continued to work until the day before her operation. She hosted Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test and then Sydney’s Pink Test in early January, all while juggling medical appointments such as blood tests and scans. Her dedication to her job highlights her resilience and commitment to her career.

Mel’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and determination required to face serious health challenges. Her return to work is not only a personal victory but also an inspiration to others facing similar struggles. As she continues her recovery, the support from her colleagues, family, and fans remains a vital part of her journey.
